How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg fell to No. 2 Christopher Newport 18-6 in the opening outing of a three-game, Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) weekend series on Saturday afternoon, April 20.

The Lions (23-9-1, 10-6 CAC) were paced at the plate by Bret Williams' two hits and pair of RBIs, while Miguel Torres and Casey Winters accounted for the team's extra-base hits.

The home team got on the board first when Williams blooped a single into shallow center field in the bottom of the third inning to score Jackson Struve. After the Captains tied the game in the top of the fourth, the Blue & White again took the lead when a CNU balk plated Casey Winters in the bottom of the frame.

Things remained that way until the top of the sixth saw starting pitcher Travis Van Houten take a hard-hit ball off the leg on a play up the middle, prompting a mini-rally that ended with the Captains (26-3, 13-1 CAC) scoring six runs in the stanza.

Williams, Smith and Zachary Koroneos drove in runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the deficit to five but the visitors worked out of a bases-loaded jam to limit the damage. CNU posted another crooked number in the top of the eighth to put things out of reach for goo..

How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg was topped by No. 2 Christopher Newport 13-4 in the second game of a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, April 20.

Miguel Torres had a nice outing, hitting a home run and a double, scoring two runs and driving in two more. Bret Williams added a solo home run and posted a pair of RBIs, while starting pitcher Zach Gettys allowed just three earned runs in five innings of work.

Like they did in game one, the Lions (23-10-1, 10-7 CAC) struck first when Williams' sacrifice fly to center field allowed Torres to tag up and score in the bottom of the first inning. Similarly to the opening contest, however, CNU (27-3, 14-1 CAC) responded with a crooked number in the top of the ensuing inning.

The Blue & White fell behind 6-1 before Torres' two-run home run and Williams' solo shot in the bottom of the third cut the deficit to two heading into the fourth stanza.

That's as close as the home team would come, however, as the visitors scored the game's next seven runs to create some breathing room in what was a close game in the early innings.

At the Plate

- Miguel Torres finished 2-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double, two RBI and a pair of runs scored.

- Bret Williams was 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk, two RBI and a run scored.

- Jackson Struve worked a pair of walks.

- Chase Smith, Zachary Koroneos and Scott Angstadt Jr. accounted for the rest of the team's hits.

On the Mound

- Zach Gettys got the start for Penn State Harrisburg, allowing just three earned runs on eight hits. He struck out five batters.

- Tyler Jackson, Brandon Riggs, Brad Richards and Nick Fitzgerald all appeared in relief roles for the Lions.

- Teddy Herbert got the win for the Captains, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks in 3.2 innings of work.

Around the Diamond

- Neither team stole a base in game two.

- The Lions committed four errors, leading to five unearned runs.

- CNU was clean in the field.

- Miguel Torres had three putouts and assisted on three more at his second base position.
