How It Happened

Bret Williams' two-run home run in the top of the 11th inning proved the difference in Penn State Harrisburg's back-and-forth, 10-8 extra-inning victory over No. 16 Johns Hopkins at JHU's Babb Field on Sunday afternoon, April 14.

After seeing a 6-1 advantage evaporate in the late innings, the Lions (22-8-1) battled back in extras, reclaiming the lead in both the 10th and 11th frames. Down to their last strike in the bottom of the 10th, the Blue Jays (21-9) extended the contest when Nathan Davis hit a two-run home run that drew the home team even at 8-8. In the top half, Zachary Koroneos launched a two-run homer over the fence in right field to put the Blue & White ahead 8-6.

The defensive stand of the game came in the bottom of the ninth following JHU's game-tying home run to lead off the inning. The Blue Jays loaded the bases with no outs, prompting Penn State Harrisburg to bring Williams in from his spot in left field to create a five-man infield. The positioning worked, as the Lions used a 6-2-3 double play to get a pair of outs and keep the winning run off the board before reliever Brendan Riotto got out of the jam by getting Brad Martin to pop out to shortstop Ryan McSorley.

The Lions' resiliency was rewarded when Williams launched the second pitch of his 11th-inning deep over the fence in right center field. Riotto retired Johns Hopkins in order to end the stanza and the game, clinching Penn State Harrisburg's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season.

The Blue & White put up five runs in the second inning, with Jackson Struve driving in a pair before the home team's second error of the stanza allowed three more to score. The Blue Jays plated their first run in the bottom of the second but the Lions pushed the lead back to five when Williams scored thanks to another JHU error.

At the Plate

- Bret Williams went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

- Zachary Koroneos was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, a pair of runs scored and two RBIs.

- Jackson Struve finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.

- Casey Winters was 2-for-6 with a double and a run scored.

- Travis Van Houten was the fifth Penn State Harrisburg player to have a multi-hit day.

On the Mound

- Brendan Riotto picked up his first win of the spring, throwing the final two innings and allowing two hits to go along with two strikeouts.

- Nick Fitzgerald got the start for the Lions and was strong in four innings of work, scattering four hits and giving up just one run.

- Brandon Riggs and Tyler Stabley also threw at least one inning of relief.

- John Donohue took the loss for Johns Hopkins, surrendering three runs on six hits in four innings pitched.

Around the Diamond

- Sunday's game was Penn State Harrisburg's first extra-inning affair of the year.
