How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg rallied from a one-run deficit and put up eight runs across the final three innings of a 10-3 road victory over Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe Mary Washington in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, April 13.

 

Starter Michael De Leon had a great outing, throwing seven innings and allowing just one earned run on two hits and no walks to go along with five strikeouts. Casey Winters provided the pop at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and a game-high four RBIs.

 

Trailing 3-2 in the seventh inning, the Lions (20-8-1, 8-5 CAC) took advantage of a UMW error and used three hits to put up three runs and regain the lead. The top of the eighth saw Winters drive in Travis Van Houten with a single to left field before he came across on a single by Zachary Koroneos.

 

The Blue & White put things out of reach in the top of the ninth when Winters doubled to center field and drove in Ryan McSorley, Bret Williams and Chase Smith, pushing the visitors' advantage to seven heading into the bottom of the stanza.

 

Reliever Tyler Jackson retired the Eagles (9-15, 3-9 CAC) in order in the ninth to seal Penn State Harrisburg's 20th win of the season.

 

At the Plate

- Casey Winters finished 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, three RBI and three runs scored.

- Miguel Torres had a multi-hit day and drove in a run from the lead-off spot.

- Tyler Aug drove in a pair of runs.

- Chase Smith scored two runs.

 

On the Mound

- Michael De Leon earned the win, throwing seven innings and allowing just one earned run. He surrendered just two hits and struck out five batters.

- Tyler Jackson threw the final two innings and gave up just one hit.

- UMW's Tyler Ray took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits and four walks.

 

Around the Diamond

- Miguel Torres and Casey Winters stole one base apiece.

- The Lions committed a pair of errors, while UMW had one.

- Ryan McSorley tallied a game-best four assists from his shortstop position.

- Chase Smith made four putouts in center field.

How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg completed the sweep of a three-game Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) series at Mary Washington with a 17-7 victory on Saturday afternoon, April 13.

The Lions (21-8-1, 9-5 CAC) racked up 18 total hits, including four of the extra-base hit variety, led by Bret Williams' 4-for-5 outing. Chase Smith added three hits, while Miguel Torres, Travis Van Houten and Jackson Struve each had multi-hit outings.

 

The Blue & White opened the contest by putting up seven runs in the first two innings. When the Eagles (9-16, 3-10 CAC) cut the deficit to 7-4 in the bottom of the third frame, the visitors answered back by using four hits, a walk and a sacrifice bunt to plate four more runs in the top of the fourth.

 

UMW did its best to keep things close, as three runs for the home team made it a more manageable 11-7 after five stanzas. Penn State Harrisburg, however, responded by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

 

Relievers Tyler Jackson and Phoenix Spiller kept Mary Washington off the board in the final four frames, sealing the game two victory for the Lions.

 

At the Plate

- Bret Williams had a big game, going 4-for-5 with a double, a walk and four runs scored.

- Chase Smith was 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a pair of runs scored.

- Travis Van Houten finished 2-for-4 with four runs scored and a game-high four RBI.

- Miguel Torres, Van Houten and Jackson Struve each recorded two hits.

- Struve tallied three RBIs, while Casey Winters and Ethan Kell drove in two runs apiece.

 

On the Mound

- Zach Gettys got the start and the win for the Lions, going 4.2 innings and striking out nine batters.

- Tyler Jackson threw 2.1 innings in a relief role and allowed no runs and four hits.

- Phoenix Spiller threw the final two innings and did not allow a hit.

- Marcel Barrett took the loss for UMW, giving up 10 runs on nine hits and five walks.

 

Around the Diamond

- Bret Williams and Chase Smith stole one base each.

- The Eagles committed two errors, while the Blue & White had one.

- Shortstop Ryan McSorley had three putouts and assisted on three more.

Barring an ominous weather forecast coming to fruition, the Lions will face a tough test when they travel to take on No. 16 Johns Hopkins in Baltimore on Sunday afternoon, April 14.
