How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg took an early lead and never gave it up in an 11-5 road victory over Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) opponent Mary Washington in the first contest of a three-game weekend series on Friday afternoon, April 12.

Miguel Torres and Casey Winters racked up three hits apiece, with Torres driving in a game-high three runs. Travis Van Houten threw a complete game on the mound, surrendering just two earned runs and racking up 10 strikeouts.

The Lions (19-8-1, 7-5 CAC) led 3-2 when rain halted the game in the fifth inning. After the delay, the Blue & White bats came to life in a big way in the top of the seventh frame. The visitors used six hits, including a Torres triple and a Jackson Struve double, a hit by pitch and a UMW error to tally six runs in the stanza and create some breathing room at 9-3.

The Eagles (9-14, 3-8 CAC) answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh but RBI singles from Casey Winters and Zachary Koroneos in the top of the eighth tacked on two more runs for Penn State Harrisburg, pushing the lead back to six in the process.

Van Houten got three consecutive Eagle batters to fly out in the bottom of the eighth before sealing the win by striking out three batters in the bottom of the ninth.

At the Plate

- Miguel Torres went 3-for-5 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored from the lead-off spot.

- Casey Winters was 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

- Zachary Koroneos drove in a pair of runs.

- Bret Williams, Travis Van Houten, Tyler Aug and Jackson Struve each score two runs.

- Struve finished 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and two walks.

On the Mound

- Travis Van Houten was strong, picking up the complete-game victory after allowing two earned runs on nine hits. He also struck out 10 batters.

- Hank Biggs took the loss for Mary Washington. He allowed three earned runs on five hits and six walks in six innings of work.

- The Lions put up six runs on UMW reliever Stephen Johnston.

- The Blue & White tacked on two more runs against the Eagles' Zack Calloway in just 0.1 innings pitched.

Around the Diamond

- Miguel Torres stole the game's only base.

- The Lions committed one error, leading to three unearned runs.

- UMW committed a pair of errors.

- Chase Smith had five putouts in center field.

- Torres assisted on a pair of outs from his second base position.

The Lions will wrap up their weekend series at Mary Washington with a doubleheader against the Eagles beginning tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
