How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg held off a late charge from Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe Southern Virginia to pick up a 9-6 victory in game one of a road doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, April 6.

 

Ryan McSorley homered twice, Zachary Koroneos added of home run of his own, Chase Smith hit a pair of doubles and Travis Van Houten racked up four hits. Van Houten also earned the win on the bump, while Tyler Jackson picked up the save.

 

Koroneos got the scoring started with an RBI single in the top of the second inning and McSorley doubled the visitors' lead with a solo home run in the top of the third. Jackson Struve made it 3-0 in favor of the Lions (16-7-1, 5-5 CAC) with a base knock that drove in Casey Winters in the third before doubles from Van Houten and Smith plated two more runs in the fifth.

 

The Blue & White added four more tallies in the eighth thanks to a solo shot from Koroneos, a Miguel Torres RBI groundout and McSorley's second home run of the game.

 

The bottom of the frame saw the Knights (12-8, 4-5 CAC) rally to the tune of six runs, capped by a Canon Anderson grand slam that cut what was a 9-0 deficit to a more manageable three runs but Jackson settled in nicely in the bottom of the ninth and slammed the door on the SVU comeback attempt to end the game.

 

At the Plate

- Travis Van Houten finished 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and one run scored.

- Ryan McSorley went 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs, three RBIs and two runs scored.

- Miguel Torres, Chase Smith, Zachary Koroneos, Tyler Aug and Jackson Struve each had multi-hit games.

- The Lions totaled six extra-base hits.

 

On the Mound

- Travis Van Houten was the winning pitcher, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out six batters.

- Tyler Jackson earned the two-inning save, his third of the season, surrendering one run on two hits.

- The Blue & White chased SVU starter Jonny Soto from the game after he allowed five runs on nine hits and a pair of walks in five innings.

- The Lions also tagged Knights' reliever for seven hits and four runs in 2.1 innings of work.

 

Around the Diamond

- With his pair of base knocks, Zachary Koroneos became the newest member of Penn State Harrisburg's 100-hits club.

- Ryan McSorley swiped Penn State Harrisburg's only bag.

- Cole Critchfield stole SVU's only base.

- The Knigts committed four errors, leading to one unearned run.

How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg was dominant in completing the two-game sweep of Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe Southern Virginia with an 18-1 victory on Saturday afternoon, April 6.

 

Bret Williams crushed a pair of home runs and a double in the victory and Zachary Koroneos racked up five RBIs in game two. Zach Gettys was victorious on the mound, striking out nine batters en route to his third win of the spring.

 

The Lions (17-7-1, 6-5 CAC) took the early lead thanks to an RBI groundout from Ryan McSorley and a Chase Smith RBI single in the top of the first inning. Then came a Koroneos solo homer in the top of the second before Williams launched a two-run shot of his own in the top of the third.

 

Miguel Torres plated thanks to a wild pitch and Travis Van Houten's RBI double pushed the lead to 9-0 after four. The Knights (12-9, 4-6 CAC) finally got on the board with a single run in the fifth but the visitors responded with two more tallies in the seventh.

 

The Blue & White poured it on in the top of the eighth, as Williams' second home run of the game started a six-run outburst that pushed the advantage to 17-1 before Jackson Struve wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the ninth stanza.

 

At the Plate

- Bret Williams was 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs, three RBIs and three runs scored.

- Zachary Koroneos finished 4-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored.

- Miguel Torres, Ryan McSorley and Nate Bream each drove in a pair of runs.

- Torres, Travis Van Houten and Scott Angstadt Jr. each had multi-hit games.

 

On the Mound

- Zach Gettys got the start and the win for the Lions, surrendering just one run on four hits to go along with nine strikeouts.

- Tyler Jackson threw two innings of relief, allowing one hit and a walk.

- Justin Kaplan threw the final frame without allowing a hit.

- SVU's Mike Stirling took the loss after allowing six earned runs on seven hits in two innings of work.

 

Around the Diamond

- Miguel Torres, Ryan McSorley and Chase Smith each stole one base.

- The Lions were clean in the field.

- SVU committed three errors, leading to a pair of unearned runs.

- McSorley racked up four assists from his shortstop spot.
