How It Happened

Despite a valiant effort, Penn State Harrisburg dropped a hard-fought 13-9 decision to No. 16 Salisbury in the opening contest of a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, March 30.

Zachary Koroneos, Bret Williams and Travis Van Houten all went yard, while Casey Winters and Tyler Aug added doubles. Van Houten also went five innings on the mound, scattering seven hits and striking out four batters.

The Lions (14-6-1, 4-3 CAC) struck first when Jackson Struve's RBI groundout drove in Ryan McSorley in the bottom of the second inning. Before the stanza was through, Koroneos got the Blue & White rolling with a two-run blast over the fence in right field to make it 3-0 in the early going.

The nationally-ranked Seagulls (15-4-1, 7-0 CAC) answered back, however, posting a pair of runs in the top of the third before drawing even with another tally in the top of the fourth.

The long ball aided Penn State Harrisburg again in the bottom of the fifth frame, with Williams launching a two-run bomb to left center field before Van Houten put the Lions up 8-3 when he crushed a three-run shot over the fence in left field three batters later.

Unfortunately for the home team, Salisbury responded with six runs in the top of the ensuing stanza and took its first lead of the game at 9-8. The Blue & White kept fighting, with Aug doubling to right field and plating Struve to tie things in the bottom half.

SU finally pulled away thanks to a run in the top of the eighth and three more in the top of the ninth.
