How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg grabbed an early lead and held on for a 7-5 non-conference victory at Ursinus on Tuesday afternoon, March 26.

Travis Van Houten led the way with three hits, including a double, while Bret Williams, Chase Smith, Miguel Torres and Tyler Aug all had multi-hit games. Mason Vogwill earned the win on the mound after allowing just one earned run and striking out six batters. Brendan Riotto picked up the save.

The hometown Bears (8-6) got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning but the Lions (13-4-1) responded with a crooked number in the top of the second. A bases-loaded walk by Williams tied the score before a wild pitch allowed Tyler Aug to come across. Torres' single drove in the Ethan Kell and Williams and Van Houten's double down the right field line brought Torres home to put the Blue & White out in front 5-1.

Kell added another run when his sacrifice fly to right field allowed Casey Winters to score in the top of the third before Ursinus cut into the deficit by scoring its second run in the bottom of the fifth. Smith had an answer in the top of the sixth, however, with his single plating Williams to push the lead back to five runs.

The home team made things interesting with three runs in the bottom of the sixth but Austin Kunkel and Brendan Riotto combined to allow just one hit, no walks and no runs to the Bears in the final three stanzas.
