How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg left no doubt in a 14-5 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) that completed a three-game sweep of the team's Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe on Sunday afternoon, March 17.

The Lions (9-2-1, 3-0 CAC) racked up 13 hits and took advantage of four errors to post the squad's highest run total of the season. Tyler Aug had three hits and scored three runs, while Chase Smith, Miguel Torres and Jackson Struve also had multi-hit days.

Smith scored the game's first run when a Travis Van Houten ground ball was booted by the Seahawks (5-6-1, 0-3 CAC) in the bottom of the first inning. The Blue & White created some breathing room in the bottom of the second when sacrifice flies from Struve and Smith brought runs across. A Struve single that plated Scott Angstadt Jr. and a double steal by Tyler Aug and Struve made it 6-0 after three.

SMC showed signs of life in the fourth and fifth stanzas, putting up four runs across the pair of innings to cut the home team's lead to 6-4 heading into the sixth.

The Blue & White halted any momentum the visitors had in the bottom of the sixth, however, as another defensive miscue led to Struve coming across before Ryan McSorley worked a bases-loaded walk to push the advantage back to four runs.

Then came the exclamation point, as Bret Williams ripped a double to left field in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Tucker Ell in the process. In the eighth, the Lions put up five runs to put things out of reach, capping a weekend that saw Penn State Harrisburg score 30 total runs across the series sweep.
