Lehigh Makes History During Doubleheader With Penn College

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's softball dropped a pair of one-run games to United East foe Penn College in doubleheader action at Courtney Pollock Memorial Field on Tuesday afternoon, April 11. The Lions fell 1-0 in the opener before being edged 3-2 in the nightcap. In the nightcap, Madelyn Lehigh became the eighth player in program history to record 100 career hits.

 

GAME 1

Penn State Harrisburg (16-7, 8-1 United East) suffered its first conference loss of the season in a 1-0 setback against Penn College (16-5, 8-1 United East) in Tuesday's opener. 

 

Mackenzie Sawdey allowed just one run and struck out eight batters but the Lions managed just two hits, including a double by Maddy Lehigh, in game one.

 

The low-scoring affair included centerfielder Lauren Hess throwing out a Wildcat attempting to score from second base in the sixth inning but a solo home run for the visitors in the inning prior proved the difference. 

 

GAME 2

Penn State Harrisburg (16-8, 8-2 United East) fell to Penn College (17-5, 9-1 United East) by the slimmest of margins for the second straight time in a 3-2 defeat in the finale of Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader. 

 

Maddy Lehigh went 3-for-4 and recorded her 100th career hit, while Mackenzie Fisher tripled and drove in a run. Kierstyn Smith allowed just two earned runs on three hits in two innings thrown, while Carissa Yeager threw five scoreless innings and struck out three batters.

 

The Wildcats scored all three of their runs in the top of the second but the Lions broke through in the bottom of the fifth when Lehigh led off with a single before Fisher's ensuing triple drove her in. Kierstyn Smith's RBI groundout plated Fisher and the deficit was cut to one run after five frames. 

 

Lehigh reached again with a single in the seventh and a Fisher groundout moved her into scoring position but Penn State Harrisburg was unable to push her across to extend the game.

 

NOTABLES

- Lehigh went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the nightcap to become just the eighth player in program history to record 100 career hits.

- Fisher was 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored in game two. 

- Rylee Martinez added a double in the second contest.

- Yeager threw five scoreless innings and tallied four strikeouts in the finale. 

- Sawdey struck out eight batters and surrendered just one run in seven innings thrown during game one. 

- Lehigh finished 1-for-2 with a double and a walk in the opener.

The Lions will look to bounce back when they travel to Wells for another conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
