Softball Starts Weekend With Sweep of Lancaster Bible

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's softball team swept a conference doubleheader over United East competitor Lancaster Bible at Courtney Pollock Memorial Field on Friday afternoon, April 7. The Lions rolled to a 6-0 victory in game one before grabbing an 8-2 win in the finale.

 

GAME 1

Penn State Harrisburg (13-6, 5-0 United East) scored six runs in game one on 14 total hits from almost every Lion, while Mackenzie Sawdey had yet another impressive pitching performance in a seven-inning victory on Friday afternoon.

Sawdey allowed zero runs against the Chargers and struck out eight batters to pick up her seventh win of the season inside the circle. Krys Moore homered and drove in two runs, Alexus Brown tripled, and Olivia Herncane and Madeline English both had doubles. Brown, Herncane, and Lauren Hess all added one RBI each.

 

 

The Lions started the scoring off early in the bottom of the second when Moore hit a two-run home run into left field which put Penn State Harrisburg ahead 2-0. Herncane had a little league home run in the fourth inning off a double that allowed her and Moore to score on the play. Still in the fourth, Brown tripled to right field and Hess added a single which drove in the last two runs of the contest for the Blue & White.

 

GAME 2

Penn State Harrisburg (14-6, 6-0 United East) racked up eight runs on just 10 hits in Friday's second outing to secure the doubleheader sweep over Lancaster Bible (7-13, 3-7 United East).

Kierstyn Smith grabbed her fifth win of the season on the mound, as she struck out a total of four batters on the afternoon. Krys Moore and Madeline English drove in three runs apiece, while Madelyn Lehigh, Kierstyn Smith, and Rylee Martinez all had two-hit games.

 

 

The Lions were the first to score in game two, when Martinez sent a double into left field and was able to get Penn State Harrisburg up by one. The Chargers got in the lead 2-1 in the third inning with a two-run home run, but the Lions answered when Moore hit her second home run of the day which scored three runs for the home team. English ended the scoring for Penn State Harrisburg in the bottom of the fifth with a little league home run of her own that gave the Lions a six-score cushion against Lancaster Bible.

 

NOTABLES

- Sawdey recorded a seven-inning shutout and got the win after racking up eight strikeouts in the opener.
- Moore went 2-for-3 with a home run, a pair of RBI, and two runs scored in game one.
- Herncane also went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a run scored in the first outing.
- Brown added a triple and an RBI in the opening contest.
- Smith earned the win after recording strikeouts in seven innings thrown.
- Moore was stellar again in the second game with a three-run home run and a pair of runs scored.
- Leigh had a double and three RBI in the nightcap.
- Martinez went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in game two.

The Lions get right back to action on Saturday afternoon as they host another United East doubleheader against Gallaudet at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
