Softball Racks Up the Runs In Sweep of Wells

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's softball team swept a conference doubleheader over United East foe Wells at Courtney Pollock Memorial Field on Sunday afternoon, April 2. The Lions rolled to a 14-0 victory in game one before putting up even more runs in a 21-0 win in the finale.

 

GAME 1

Penn State Harrisburg (10-5, 3-0 United East) scored 14 runs on a dozen hits and Mackenzie Sawdey turned in a stellar pitching performance in a five-inning, game-one victory on Sunday afternoon.

 

Sawdey threw a five-inning perfect game and struck out seven batters to pick up her fifth win of the season inside the circle. Leah Macaluso tripled, doubled, and drove in four runs, while Madelyn Lehigh and Alexus Brown each had three-hit outings.

 

The Lions scored five runs with two outs in the bottom of the first before tacking on three more in the second. Macaluso doubled and drove in a pair in the opening frame and added a triple that scored two more in the ensuing stanza. After a scoreless third, Penn State Harrisburg put up another crooked number in the fourth, using four hits to add six runs before Sawdey put together a 1-2-3 top of the fifth that culminated with a strikeout to end the game.

 

GAME 2

Penn State Harrisburg (11-5, 4-0 United East) racked up 20-plus hits and scored 20-plus runs in Sunday's second outing to secure the doubleheader sweep over Wells (0-12, 0-8 United East).

 

Carissa Yeager threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout and struck out seven batters to earn her second win of the year. Kierstyn Smith and Lalaine Castellon drove in three runs apiece, while Madelyn Lehigh, Rylee Martinez, Jocelyn Bennett, and Yeager all had three-hit games.

 

The Lions racked up a season-high 21 runs, using four hits to plate four in the first inning before taking advantage of two errors and using four more hits to score five in the second frame. They added five runs in the third thanks to seven hits and capped things off with a seven-hit, seven-run bottom of the fourth. 

 

NOTABLES

- Sawdey recorded a five-inning perfect game and got the win after racking up seven strikeouts in the opener.

- Macaluso went 2-for-2 with a triple, a double, four RBI, and three runs scored in game one.

- Lehigh finished 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored in the first outing.

- Brown was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored in the opening contest.

- Yeager earned the win after allowing just two hits and recording seven strikeouts in five innings thrown.

- Lehigh had three hits, including two doubles, and scored four runs in game two. 

- Yeager also had two doubles, scored a run, and drove in one more in the nightcap.

- Kierstyn Smith doubled and had three RBI in the final contest.

The Lions get right back to it on Monday afternoon when they travel to Widener for a non-conference doubleheader.
