Lehigh's Walk-Off Heroics Lead Softball to Split With Berks

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's softball team split a pair of United East contests with conference rival Penn State Berk at a frigid Courtney Pollock Memorial Field on Tuesday afternoon, April 19. The Lions captured a thrilling 6-5 walk-off win in the opener before falling 13-5 in five innings in the nightcap.

GAME 1

Madelyn Lehigh played the hero for Penn State Harrisburg (19-8, 13-2 United East) in a 6-5 come-from-behind, walk-off victory over conference rival Penn State Berks (17-7, 14-3 United East) in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

Lehigh was the lone Penn State Harrisburg player to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Her game-winning base knock came with her team trailing 5-4 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. She connected with a Briana Smith pitch and poked it back up the middle to drive in Krysten Moore and Lauren Hess, clinching the thrilling comeback victory that sent the home dugout into a celebratory frenzy.

McKenzie Boozel went 1-for-3 at the dish with a double, two RBI, and a run scored, while Madelyn Krantz and Madeline English drove in one run apiece. Carissa Yeager got the win on the rubber after brushing off a shaky start and keeping the visitors off the board in the final three frames.

Penn State Berks struck first when Arizona Schreck homered in the top of the first before a Krantz RBI single plated pinch runner Alexus Brown in the bottom of the third. The visitors broke the tie with a four-run fourth but Boozel's double and an English base knock drove in three runs to cut the deficit to one in the sixth.

GAME 2

A big third inning by Penn State Berks (18-7, 15-3 United East) proved too much for Penn State Harrisburg (19-9, 13-3 United East) to overcome in a 13-5, five inning loss in the second game of a conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

McKenzie Boozel went 3-for-3 with three RBI, Maddie Krantz was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Maddy Lehigh finished 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored.

The hometown Lions led 4-1 entering the third frame but Penn State Berks put together a big inning, using six hits, three walks, a hit by pitch, and some timely two-out hitting to score eight runs in the top half.

Penn State Harrisburg took the lead in the bottom of the second when Krantz's two-out single drove in Samantha Weaver and Boozel's double three at-bats later plated Krantz and Lehigh to give the home team a three-run cushion.
