Softball Falls to Penn College In Conference Championship

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg softball's postseason run came to an end with a pair of losses to Penn College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship Series on Saturday afternoon, May 15. The Lions were unable to complete the comeback in a 7-4 game one loss before falling 6-0 in the second outing.

GAME 1

Penn State Harrisburg brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the seventh inning but was unable to prolong the game and ultimately fell 7-4 in the opening contest on Saturday afternoon. Steph Reider was outstanding at the plate, hitting a long ball and driving in all four runs.

The Lions used a pair of singles and a walk to load up the bases with two away in the top of the final frame but Penn College hurler Kyla Benner worked out of trouble and got a fly ball to strand the runners and seal the victory for the home team in game one.

The Wildcats struck first in the bottom of the opening stanza and tacked on two more in the bottom of the second to grab an early 3-0 advantage. Reider, the newly-minted NEAC Rookie of the Year, got the Blue & White on the board in the top of the third with an RBI single that drove in Courtney Fleisher and cut the deficit to two.

The home team stayed hot at the plate and put up a three-spot in the bottom of the fourth but Reider answered back with a three-run blast in the top of the fifth to keep things within reach. The Lions threatened again in the top of the seventh but were unable to capitalize with the bases full.

GAME 2

Penn State Harrisburg matched Penn College's hit total in game two but five errors doomed the Lions and led to six unearned runs in the 6-0 loss.

An error with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the second allowed a pair of runs to come across for the Wildcats before back-to-back-to-back singles drove in four more runs and pushed the lead to six after two.

The Lions got the first two batters on base in the top of the fourth but were unable to convert the inning's good start into any scoring. The Blue & White got a lead-off base runner to begin the fifth as well but again couldn't bring her around before going down 1-2-3 in the sixth and seventh to end the game.
