How It Happened
Penn State Harrisburg's historic 2019-20 campaign came to an end following a 102-83 setback to No. 13 Yeshiva at John Hopkins' Goldfarb Gymnasium in the NCAA Tournament's Second Round on Saturday night, March 7.
The Lions (21-8) were led by Donyae Baylor-Carroll's 26 points, while Nate Curry netted 18 points and nine rebounds. Dylan Daniels had 15 points and five blocks, Pedro Rodriguez added 13 points and Zegary Scott III finished with nine points and seven assists.
The contest proved a back-and-forth affair until midway through the first half, with the teams trading the lead 15 times and breaking ties on seven occasions. After falling behind by as many as 11 points early in the second half, the Blue & White cut the deficit to four at the 14:33 mark following a Baylor-Carroll 4-point play and a pair of free throws from Daniels.
After the Maccabees scored the next seven points and pushed the lead back to 11 with 13:13 left to play, Baylor-Carroll knocked down another 3-ball to cut the deficit to 67-59 with little more than 11 minutes remaining. Yeshiva put together another 7-0 run, however, stretching the advantage to 15 for the first time and forcing the Lions to try to play catch up the rest of the way.
Penn State Harrisburg trailed 44-38 at the break but led throughout the first half. The Blue & White held the advantage as late as the 3:49 mark of the opening half thanks to a Curry 3-ball off a Baylor-Carroll feed. A Daniels layup made it 23-22 less than five minutes prior after a Rodriguez 3-pointer had given the Lions a one-point advantage with 9:07 left until halftime.
The largest Blue & White lead of the night was established when Baylor-Carroll buried a jumper from beyond the arc off a Scott III assist to extend the advantage to four at the 15:57 mark of the first half.
Inside the Numbers
- The Lions shot 39.5 percent from the field and 40.6 percent from 3-point territory.
- Yeshiva shot an impressive 65.1 percent from the floor and 64.7 percent from beyond the arc.
- As a group, the Blue & White went 10-of-11 (90.9 percent) from the free throw line.
- The rebounding battle was almost even, with the Maccabees finishing with a 37-36 advantage.
- Yeshiva scored 54 points in the paint, compared to just 26 for Penn State Harrisburg.
- The Maccabees bench outscored the Blue & White reserves 16-2.
- Donyae Baylor-Carroll scored a team-high 26 points, connecting on seven 3-pointers along the way. He added four assists and three steals.
- Nate Curry had 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go along with nine boards.
- Dylan Daniels finished with 15 points, five blocks and five rebounds.
- Pedro Rodriguez racked up 13 points, six boards and three assists.
- Zegary Scott III dished out seven assists to go along with nine points and three rebounds.
- In the final game of his collegiate career, Clinton Asalu tallied two points, four boards and a pair of assists.
- Ryan Turell led the way for Yeshiva, finishing with a game-high 30 points.
- Gabriel Leifer recorded a triple-double for the Maccabees with 10 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists.
History Made
The Lions finish the 2019-20 season with a 21-8 overall record, setting a new program record for wins in a single season. The conclusion comes after the team won the program's first conference championship, made its first appearance in the big dance and won its first-ever NCAA Tournament outing; a thrilling double-overtime victory over No. 6 Johns Hopkins.
