How It Happened

Poor shooting and uncharacteristic turnovers cost Penn State Harrisburg in the team's 68-57 loss to Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe and 2018 NCAA Tournament participant York (Pa.) at the Capital Union Building on Wednesday night, Jan. 9.

Kahlil Williams turned in one of his best performances of the year to lead the Lions (9-5, 1-2 CAC), recording a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Donyae Baylor-Carroll came to life in the second half and finished with 14 points, while Keenan Wise the third player to reach the double-digit scoring mark with 11.

Penn State Harrisburg jumped out to an early lead when Williams converted a tough layup in the post before a Wise 3-pointer put the home team ahead 9-7 a few moments later. The teams traded baskets before Brandon Coleman netted four consecutive points to stretch the Blue & White advantage to 21-17 at the 6:24 mark.

From there, the Lions' shooting cooled off, allowing the Spartans (9-5, 2-1 CAC) to close out the first half on a 10-2 run and take a 27-23 lead into the locker room.

After his team fell behind by 11 early in the second half, Baylor-Carroll took over for a stretch, racking up eight points in a row, including a pair of jumpers from beyond the arc, to bring Penn State Harrisburg to within three at 38-35 with 15:09 left to play.

Then came the key stretch for York (Pa.) that saw the visitors score the game's next 11 points over a six-minute span. By the time Williams took over on the offensive end for the Blue & White to the tune of 13 second-half points, the Lions found themselves facing a double-digit deficit they were unable to overcome down the stretch.

Each time Penn State Harrisburg cut the Spartan lead to single digits, the visitors connected on attempts from 3-point territory to hold off any potential Blue & White run in the final minutes.

Inside the Numbers

- The Lions shot just 35.3 percent from the field, while York (Pa.) finished with field goal percentage of 41.7 percent.

- Neither team had a great night shooting from distance but the Spartans knocked down 13 triples, while Penn State Harrisburg managed just six.

- The visitors benefited from 30 Blue & White turnovers that led to 29 points.

- Despite the loss, Penn State Harrisburg won the rebounding battle by a wide margin at 48-24.

- The Lions got to the foul line 20 times, compared to just seven chances for the Spartans.

- Kahlil Williams scored a game-high 21 points on 70 percent shooting for the Blue & White, adding 12 rebounds to record a double-double.

- Donyae Baylor-Carroll finished with 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal.

- Keenan Wise added 11 points, three boards, two assists and a pair of steals off the bench.

- Gbolahan Alliyu grabbed 10 boards and blocked three shots.

- Brandon Coleman chipped in with seven points, five rebounds and two assists in a reserve role.

- Jason Bady led the Spartans with 19 points, nine boards, four assists, three steals and three rejections.
