Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep of Penn State Berks

READING, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's baseball team completed the three-game sweep of United East foe Penn State Berks with a pair of road victories on Sunday afternoon, March 26. The Lions won the opener 10-2 before closing things out with a 14-3 win in the final game of the weekend. 

 

GAME 1

Kevin Lehner stole the show in Penn State Harrisburg's 10-2 win over Penn State Berks in the first game of Sunday's conference doubleheader. 

 

Lehner launched two home runs, added a double, and drove in four runs to lead the way at the plate. Lucas Floyd had a three-hit outing, while Matt Parks and Blaine Waltimyer drove in two runs each. Danny Eden struck out six and earned his third win of the year.

 

The Lions (13-5, 5-0 United East) got the scoring started when Lehner laced an RBI double in the top of the first before he and Parks hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the third. Penn State Berks (3-10, 2-3 United East) got on the board in the bottom of the third but the visitors responded with a crooked number in the fifth, scoring four runs thanks to two-run homers from Lehner and Waltimyer. 

 

Penn State Harrisburg capped the scoring in the top of the final frame when Dallas Hite and Brendan Henn hit consecutive sacrifice flies to plate Tim Haftl and Floyd, respectively. 

 

GAME 2

The bats stayed hot for Penn State Harrisburg (14-5, United East) in a 14-3 victory over Penn State Berks (3-11, 2-4 United East) in the final contest of the weekend's three-game series on Sunday afternoon.

 

Dallas Hite hit a grand slam, Matt Parks drove in three runs, and Kevin Lehner and Matt Isaac each finished with two RBI. Hunter Merritt had a great outing on the mound, pitching six scoreless innings with six strikeouts while allowing just two hits and a walk.

 

For the second straight game, Lehner got the scoring started with an RBI double in the top of the first. Lucas Floyd matched the feat in the second to double the lead before Parks and Lehner hit back-to-back RBI singles in the third to make it 4-0.

 

Parks struck again when he doubled to right center in the fourth and drove in Hite and Brendan Henn. Hite blew the game open when his first grand slam of the season ballooned the advantage to 10-0 in the fifth, Isaac drove in a pair with an RBI single in the seventh, and Braeden Piotrowski pushed it to 13-0 with a sac fly in the eighth. 

 

After the home team got on the board in the bottom of the eighth, Blaine Waltimyer responded with an RBI single that scored Peyton Moyer in the ninth to put a bow on the game's scoring.

- Parks went 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk, two RBI, and a pair of runs scored in game one.

- Waltimyer was 2-for-4 with a home run, a pair of RBI, and a run scored in the first outing.

- Floyd had three hits and Henn scored two runs in the opener. 

- Eden struck out six and allowed just two runs on four hits in five innings of work to earn the game-one win.

- Lehner stayed hot in game two, going 3-for-4 with a double and two more RBI.

- Hite drove in four runs in the nightcap thanks to his grand slam. He also scored twice and stole a base.

- Henn finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in the second game.

- Parks went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI, a walk, a stolen base, and a pair of runs scored in the final contest.

- Merritt secured his third win of the year in impressive fashion, allowing just two hits and a walk to go along with six strikeouts in six innings thrown.
