Baseball Sweeps Lancaster Bible, Clinches Playoff Spot

LANCASTER, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's baseball team clinched a spot in the upcoming United East Tournament thanks to a doubleheader sweep of conference foe Lancaster Bible on Saturday afternoon, April 23. The Lions won the opener 12-1 before finishing off the weekend with an 11-6 victory.

GAME 1

Penn State Harrisburg (21-14, 15-2 United East) started off Saturday's doubleheader right, rolling to a 12-1 victory over Lancaster Bible (15-18, 10-7 United East) in the afternoon's first outing.

Chase Smith went 3-for-4 with a grand slam, a walk, five RBI, and three runs scored. Kevin Lehner also hit a grand slam, going 2-for-2 with three walks, four RBI, and a run scored. Dallas Hite, Matt Parks, and Robbie Skinner scored two runs apiece. Zach Gettys got the win on the rubber, allowing just one earned run on five hits to go along with nine strikeouts in six innings thrown.

Maddux Ryan got the scoring started with an RBI single in the top of the first before Smith blew the game open with his second-inning grand slam. The Lions added another run in the second thanks to a Lancaster Bible error.

The Chargers used a solo home run to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth but Smith picked up another RBI when he worked a bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh. Parks did the same to extend the lead to 8-1 and Lehner put an exclamation mark on the scoring with his grand slam later in the frame.

GAME 2

Penn State Harrisburg (22-14, 16-2 United East) defeated Lancaster Bible (15-19, 10-8 United

East) 11-6 in the second outing of a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to win its 12th straight game.

Matt Parks was 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, a double, three RBI, and three runs scored. Kevin Lehner went 3-for-5 and hit his second home run of the day to go along with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Jake Stasyk also had a multi-hit game.

The Lions scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first before LBC cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame.

Parks struck with a two-run home run in the top of the third and a passed ball allowed Lehner to come across before the half inning was through. Parks kept things rolling in the next frame when his double to left field drove in Hite. During the next at-bat, Lehner pushed the lead to 8-2 with a two-run home run.

The Chargers scored multiple runs in the fifth and sixth, respectively, but a Hite double in the top of the seventh plated Stasyk and Robbie Skinner and gave the Lions some breathing room. Penn State Harrisburg tacked on an insurance run in the ninth when Drew Sassaman scored on a passed ball.
