Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep of Penn State Berks

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's baseball team completed the weekend sweep of United East foe Penn State Berks thanks to a pair of convincing victories in doubleheader action on Sunday afternoon, April 10. The Lions rolled to a 9-0 shutout in the opener before wrapping things up with an 11-2 win in the nightcap.

GAME 1

Penn State Harrisburg (12-14, 9-2 United East) shut out Penn State Berks (9-12, 3-8 United East) in a 9-0 victory in the first of Sunday's pair of conference outings.

Zach Gettys was stellar on the mound, throwing a complete game, striking out 11, and allowing just three hits in seven innings of work to earn his fifth win of the spring. Dallas Hite and Maddux Ryan each homered and added a double, while Brendan Henn also had a multi-hit outing.

The Lions took advantage of an error to get on the board first in the bottom of the second before a Chase Smith RBI single and a Kevin Lehner sac fly plated two more in the bottom of the third. Drew Sassaman added an RBI ground out in the fifth and Ryan blew the game wide open with a three-run bomb in the fifth. Hite added a solo shot in the sixth to put the finishing touches on the victory.

GAME 2

Penn State Harrisburg (13-14, 10-2 United East) finished off a three-game sweep of conference foe Penn State Berks (9-13, 3-9 United East) with an 11-2 victory in Sunday's nightcap.

Dallas Hite had a big game, going 4-for-5 with a home run, five RBI, and two runs scored, while Chase Smith became just the second player in program history to reach 200 hits for his career. Brendan Henn and Drew Sassaman also had multi-hit games.

Hite led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run over the fence in left center but the visitors used small ball to take their first lead of the weekend in the top of the second. Hite erased that advantage with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the frame and the hometown Lions proceeded to reel off eight more runs in the stanza thanks to the combination of eight hits, three Penn State Berks errors, and two walks.

After Hunter Merritt exited following a quality start, relievers Nick Fitzgerald, Justin Emanuel, Everett Horton, and Simeon Davis combined to allow just one baserunner in the final four frames.
