No. 5 UW-Whitewater Too Much For Baseball On Day Two of NCAAs

WHITEWATER, Wis. – No. 5 Wisconsin-Whitewater used stellar pitching to defeat Penn State Harrisburg baseball 6-1 in NCAA Tournament Regional Round action at UW-Whitewater's Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium on Saturday, May 29. The Lions will face Adrian, the region's top seed, in an elimination game later this afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UW-Whitewater starting pitcher Westin Muir proved too much for the Penn State Harrisburg offense in the team's 6-1 loss to the regional hosts on Saturday afternoon. The Blue & White mustered six hits but just one run in the contest.

Zach Gettys turned in a quality start for the Lions, throwing six innings before a high pitch count forced him to exit before the seventh frame. The lefty allowed just two earned runs on six hits before giving way to the bullpen.

The hometown Warhawks used a pair of walks, two singles, and a Penn State Harrisburg error to get on the board first and plate three runs in the top of the third. The Lions cut into the deficit in the bottom of the stanza thanks to a Ryan McSorley bases-loaded sacrifice fly that drove in Casey Winters.

UW-Whitewater tacked on three more in the top of the seventh behind a hit-by-pitch and bases-loaded single and though Chase Smith doubled to lead off the bottom of the inning, the Blue & White were unable to bring him across.

The Lions threatened with two outs in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a walk from Smith and a Matt Isaac single but Muir was able to work out of trouble and get a ground ball out to earn the complete-game victory.
