How It Happened

After a promising start, Penn State Harrisburg faltered in the final innings of a 13-4 non-conference loss to Shenandoah on Sunday afternoon, April 7.

Michael De Leon was outstanding on the mound for the Lions (17-8-1), allowing just one run on five hits and one walk. He also struck out seven batters. Ryan McSorley had a multi-hit game, recording a pair of doubles and scoring two runs.

After two scoreless innings of play to begin the game, the Blue & White struck first when McSorley's double to left field drove in Jackson Struve from second base in the bottom of the third. Before the frame was out, McSorley came across on a wild pitch, giving the home team a 2-0 advantage heading into the fourth stanza.

The Hornets (15-8) got on the board with an RBI double to right field in the top of the fifth but Penn State Harrisburg responded with a tally in the bottom of the sixth when Struve plated thanks to another errant SU pitch.

The visitors took advantage of a Blue & White error and posted four hits, including an RBI double, to take their first lead of the afternoon at 5-3 in the top of the seventh. They kept rolling in the eighth when three Hornets were hit by pitches and another walked.  From there, Shenandoah used two singles and a three-run home run to stretch the lead to 13-3 heading into the final frame.

The Lions loaded the bases with no one away but were able to manage just one run when Casey Winters' sacrifice fly drove in McSorley.

At the Plate

- Ryan McSorley was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and one RBI.

- Travis Van Houten went 2-for-4 with a walk.

- Bret Williams finished 1-for-3 with a double and a pair of walks.

- Casey Winters was 1-for-4 with a sac fly that drove in a run.

On the Mound

- Michael De Leon impressed in his start, going six innings and allowing just one run on five hits to go along with seven strikeouts.

- The Lions chased SU starter Carson Kulina from the game after 3.2 innings. He surrendered two earned runs on three hits and six walks.

- Matt House picked up the win for Shenandoah, throwing the final 3.2 innings and allowing just one run on four hits and a walk.

Around the Diamond

- Each team committed one error.

- The Hornets stole two bases on the day.

- Ryan McSorley assisted on three outs from his shortstop position.

- Jackson Struve recorded four putouts in right field.

The Lions host Keystone for another non-conference outing on Tuesday afternoon, April 9. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
