Nittany Lions Remain Perfect in NEAC

April 3, 2008

Middletown — In an early season match-up pitting the two teams in first place in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) the Nittany Lions used some timely hitting to win both games against the Crimson Eagles of Philadelphia Biblical University. The first game went the Blue and White's way 9-2, while in game two they needed a seventh inning rally to win 5-4. The two wins for Penn State Harrisburg improve their record to 7-9 overall and 4-0 in the NEAC. Philadelphia Biblical University drops to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in the NEAC.

Although the 9-2 score would suggest a blow out, it was far from that in the first game at Penn State Harrisburg Baseball field yesterday. Penn State Harrisburg started off where they left off Sunday afternoon with a two run first inning homer from Garret Piper and led 2-0 until the top of the fifth inning. In the fifth the Crimson Eagles got a RBI single from Lee Svendsen and another run from a walk with the bases loaded. Penn State Harrisburg took command of the first game in their half of the fifth though with four runs, which then was followed by three more in the sixth. The big hit came in the fifth with two outs when Matt Umberger hit a three run homer to make the score 6-2. The sixth inning saw the Blue and White get a two run single from Piper and a RBI single from Sean Frailey. Pitcher, Nick Knull, went six strong innings giving up just three hits and two earned runs, while striking out six to get the win.

Game two was very exciting. Maybe upset after losing the first game, Philadelphia Biblical pushed a run across in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Nathan King. After the Nittany Lions quickly tied up the game with a run scoring double from Piper the Crimson Eagle started to take control of the game scoring two more runs in the third and another run in the fifth to stretch the lead to 4-1. But the relentless, no quiet attitude of Penn State Harrisburg pays off again in the fifth when Nate Cresswell hit a two run homer to make the score 4-3. After that, the Blue and White got two more runners on in the fifth and then two more on in the sixth to only see them left stranded. But that wasn't the case in the seventh inning. Thanks to a walk by Derron Pellman and Piper there were two runners on for Frailey who singled in Pellman to tie the game. Following his at bat, the Nittany Lions proceeded to win the game thanks to a single by Josh Kefauver, 5-4. Austin Kulp, who pitched the entire second game, got the win.

Piper was the hitting star Wednesday for the Nittany Lions reaching base in seven of his eight plate appearances. He also hit a home run and had five RBI's in the two games. Penn State Harrisburg also had three RBI's in the two games from Frailey and Umberger.

For Philadelphia Biblical King went 3 for 7 in the two games with two RBI's.

Penn State Harrisburg's baseball team is back in action at home this Saturday against Lancaster Bible College at noon.
