Penn State Harrisburg intercollegiate athletics program grows with dedication of new baseball field

August 24, 2007

The expansion of Penn State Harrisburg's intercollegiate athletic program took another noteworthy step today (Wednesday, Aug. 22) with the formal dedication of its new baseball field.

Constructed through the generosity of two friends of the college – James C. Byerly and John W. Gleim Jr. – the new facility's dedication ceremonies included comments from Chancellor Madlyn L. Hanes and head baseball coach Bob Maschmeyer. Current members of the baseball team and alumni of the squad also took part.

Byerly, the President of HDH Byerly, is chair of the Penn State Harrisburg Board of Advisers and is closely attuned to the college's priorities and needs. With Penn State Harrisburg joining the North Eastern Athletic Conference this fall and beginning NCAA Division III provisional membership, he spearheaded the effort to build the field. Gleim is the owner of an excavating firm in Carlisle and a friend of Byerly.

In addition to the new field, United Concordia has provided a financial gift to construct the home team dugout on the field which will see its first intercollegiate action in spring 2008.

The new baseball field now locates all intercollegiate sports on campus with the exception of golf which has Dauphin Highlands as its home course.

Penn State Harrisburg is home to 12 intercollegiate sports – men's and women's tennis, basketball, cross country, and soccer; men's baseball; women's volleyball; women's softball, and golf.
