Nittany Lions Sweep Inaugural Series at New Field

March 31, 2008

Middletown — Penn State Harrisburg used 20 hits to win the home opener 19-7, and then was helped by a strong performance on the mound by Barry Wiestling (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) to win the second game 11-1 against the Spartans of D'Youville College. The games not only were the first two at Penn State Harrisburg Baseball Field, but they were the Blue and White's first two games in the North Eastern Athletic Conference this season. With the sweep Sunday the Nittany Lions are now 5-9 overall, and 2-0 in the NEAC while D'Youville College is now 0-11 overall, and 0-4 in the NEAC.

The first game saw the Nittany Lions take a 7-1 lead after two innings, and then just keep pouring it on. Penn State Harrisburg had two innings, the second and fifth, in which they batted around, helping lead to the 19-7 final score. The second inning saw the Nittany Lions benefit from two costly errors by D'Youville, whicn in turn led to seven runs. In the fifth the Blue and White hammered out seven hits in route to six runs. The big hit in the fifth was Matt Umberger's two run homer which marked the first home run at Penn State Harrisburg Baseball field.

Austin Kulp (Newville, PA/Big Spring) led Penn State Harrisburg in the first game with two hits and five RBI's, while Matt Umberger (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) was close behind with his home run and four RBI's. The Blue and White where very balanced throughout the lineup as every starter had at least two hits and scored at least one run. Zach Smith for D'Youville College had a solid game going 3-4 and scoring three runs.

The second game once again saw the Blue and White dominating the Spartans early and often. This time though, they where able to also quiet their bats too. The Nittany Lions scored six runs on five hits in the first inning to easily put the game out of reach. They were also helped by four D'Youville errors. The six runs was more then enough for Wiestling who didn't allow a base runner until the first batter of the sixth inning. Wiestling did give up a run in the seventh inning, but was solid throughout pitching all seven innings, giving up just three hits striking out three batters, while walking just one, in route to Penn State Harrisburg's 11-1 victory.

Again the Nittany Lions saw the offensive production come from all over the lineup as eight of the nine starters had hits. Sean Frailey (Middletown, PA/Middletown) and Brett Harmony (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) reached base all four times up. Frailey had two doubles and two RBI's, while Harmony had a triple.

Two of D'Youville's three hits in the second game came from Nigel Spahr, who went 2-3.

Penn State Harrisburg's baseball team is back in action at home this Wednesday against Phildelphia Biblical College at noon.
