Women's Volleyball Splits at Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. – Penn State Harrisburg's women's volleyball team split a pair of contests during tri-match play at Rutgers-Camden on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 19. The Lions fell to the hosts 3-0 in the opener before responding with a 3-1 victory over Wilkes in the team's final outing of the day.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

After dropping its first match of the day to Rutgers-Camden by set scores of 25-18, 26-24, and 25-19, Penn State Harrisburg bounced back nicely with a four-set victory over Wilkes by scores of 19-25, 25-11, 25-10, and 25-16 on Sunday afternoon.

 

Against Rutgers-Camden, the Blue & White fought back from an early 5-0 first-set deficit to cut the home team's advantage to two following an Olivia Koicuba service ace. From there, the Scarlet Raptors used a 6-1 run to stretch the lead and eventually capture the set. Set two saw the Lions fighting from behind again, erasing a 6-1 deficit and pulling to within one at 13-12 thanks to an Emmaline Stevens kill off an Alyssa Snyder assist. RU-Camden went on a 6-0 run but the visitors scored five in a row late to force extra play before the home team scored the final two points to clinch the set. The final set saw Penn State Harrisburg take a 10-6 lead behind a Megan Morris service ace but the Scarlet Raptors put together an impressive 11-2 run to shift the momentum and eventually take the set and the match.

 

The Lions dropped the opening set against Wilkes before making quick work of the Colonels in the ensuing three games. Set two saw the Blue & White score the final four points, capped by a Koicuba service ace, to draw even. The third set saw Penn State Harrisburg reel off eight points in a row during a Katie Richardson service run in the middle stretch before a Tori Henderson kill secured the win. With the scored tied 10-10 in the fourth and final set, the Lions closed things out with a 15-6 run, including nine straight points during a Tiniira Tubo service run in the closing moments.

 

NOTABLES

- Emmaline Stevens and Tori Henderson each tallied seven kills against Rutgers-Camden.

- Megan Morris had a team-high nine digs in the opener.

- Morris and Julia Choe converted four service aces each in the first match.

- Alyssa Snyder racked up 26 assists against the Scarlet Raptors.

- Against Wilkes, Stevens posted 13 kills, while Cheyanna Buckingham tallied 12.

- Morris had a dozen digs against the Colonels, while Katie Richardson posted 10 and Choe added nine.

- Choe and Corrinne Cook combined for eight service aces in the final match.

- With the split, Penn State Harrisburg improved to 6-2 on the season.
