Reider Named ROTY to Lead All-Conference Honorees

LATHAM, N.Y. – Penn State Harrisburg softball's Steph Reider has been named the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Rookie of the Year to lead five all-conference selections for the Lions, as announced by the conference on Thursday morning, May 13.

 

In addition to her major award, Reider was also named to the NEAC All-Conference First Team, while Courtney Fleisher, Mary-Kate Penczkowski, Delaney Nevius, and Kaylee DeMatteo earned second-team all-conference recognition.

 

Reider is just the second player in program history to earn the league's rookie of the year award, joining former standout Rieley Loch in 2013. The freshman turned in a breakout debut campaign and currently leads the conference in hits (46) and total bases (69), while ranking second among conference players in batting average (.511), slugging percentage (.767), doubles (12), and RBI (28). The corner infielder has also hit three homers and scored 23 runs, while racking up an OPS of 1.293. The Maytown, Pa. native was named the NEAC Player of the Week earlier this spring (4/12).

 

During her first full season for the Blue & White, Fleisher got it done at the plate and inside the circle. The junior slashed .407/.398/.549 on the year and ranks second in the conference in hits (37) and runs (29), as well as third in total bases (50) and seventh in doubles (6). The versatile utility player also added a home run, two triples, and 15 RBI. In 15 appearances on the rubber, she tallied four wins and racked up 44 strikeouts to go along with a 3.82 ERA. The Newport, Pa. native earned NEAC Player of the Week honors earlier this spring (5/3).

 

Penczkowski was strong inside the circle during the most-recent campaign, making 16 appearances and throwing 82.1 total innings. The senior right hander racked up eight wins, including a pair in the team's NEAC Tournament Semifinal Series victory over top-seeded Penn State Berks, and added a save this spring. The Hanover Township, Pa. native threw nine complete games and tallied 58 strikeouts to go along with a team-best ERA of 3.74.

 

Nevius was a key contributor at the plate while also catching every game behind the dish this season. The senior slashed .338/.398/.494 this spring with 26 hits, including a pair of home runs and six doubles. The Harrisburg, Pa. native drove in 15 runs and scored eight more. She also led the Lions with nine walks. As a member of the team's battery, Nevius was a wall, recording a .993 fielding percentage with 13 assists and just five passed balls on the year.

 

DeMatteo turned in the best season of her career as a senior, slashing .473/.540/.545 with an OPS of 1.085. The corner infielder racked up 26 hits in just 55 at-bats, adding two doubles and triple this spring. The Clarks Summit, Pa. native drove in 11 runs and scored seven more to go along with eight walks. At third base, she recorded seven putouts and assisted on 12 more.

 

Penn State Harrisburg will travel to Penn College for this weekend's best-of-three NEAC Championship Series beginning on Saturday afternoon, May 15.
