Men's Tennis Returns to Action With Victory at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Penn State Harrisburg's men's tennis team returned from its midseason hiatus and defeated Stevenson 7-2 in non-conference action in the first match of the spring on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 25. 

 

The Lions (5-1) took two of three in doubles action, with the No. 1 team of Cooper Wheeler and Damir Cuturic leading the way with an 8-6 victory in the top spot. Zijun Owen Ou and Derwin Merca also earned a win in the second contest, topping Stevenson's No. 2 duo 8-3. 

 

Penn State Harrisburg kept that momentum rolling in singles play, racking up five more victories to clinch the overall match. Wheeler got by Cory Johnson 7-6, 6-1 in the top matchup, Cuturic made quick work of the Mustangs' No. 2 player thanks to a 6-0, 6-1 decision, and Andrew Schreck was victorious in the third outing 6-2, 6-3. Ou was strong in his tiebreak and eventually secured a 7-6, 7-5 win in the No. 4 contest and Merca won the marathon of a No. 4 match, erasing a first-set setback and fighting off set point while trailing 10-9 in the tiebreak to pull out a 5-7, 6-1, 12-10 win in the fifth pairing. 

 

The next time the Lions compete, they'll do so below the Mason-Dixon Line when they travel to Hilton Head, S.C. for their annual spring break trip beginning on Sunday, March 3.
