Women’s Tennis Falls in Season Finale

Middletown, Pa. – Attempting to keep up with the recent success of the men's team this spring is not an easy task, but the Lady Lions did what they could.  In a conference stacked with talent, Harrisburg fought to the finish in every match, but struggled to pick up wins.  The Lions hoped to pick up a victory in the season finale versus York College, but the Spartans were just too much and swept the Blue and White 9-0.

The match started off with the top doubles pairing of Jessica Miller (Manheim, PA / Manheim Central) and Shawna Brandt (Jonestown, PA / Northern Lebanon) taking on the top pair of York.  The Spartans defeated the Lions number one pair 8-4.  York continued their early success by stealing the two other doubles matches by scores of 8-4 and 8-3 to take a commanding lead into singles play.

Unfortunately, the Lions did not have much success in the singles portion of Tuesday's match either.  York rolled through singles play taking all six matches.  Tough efforts by the Lions were not hard to see.  Brandt played a tough match in the two slot, winning thensecond set 7-6 with a 7-2 tiebreaker but falling to pull out the win.  Hilary Mataure (Brisbane, Australia / Clayfield) showed toughness for the Blue and White fighting to the finish in a 6-2, 6-2 defeat.

The visiting Spartans walked away from Tuesday's match with a 9-0 victory.  Penn State Harrisburg finishes the season with an overall record of 3-13.  The only way to go is up for the young Lady Lions and that is what they will look to do when they begin their season next fall.
