How It Happened
Penn State Harrisburg used a goal from Rhyan Socash in the second overtime period to pick up the team's first North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) win of the season, defeating Penn College 2-1 at Nittany Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 14.
The Lions' and Wildcats' offenses were quiet in the first half, with neither team establishing control during the first 45 minutes.
The Lions would start to take control of the game in the second half, putting the Wildcats defense under constant pressure resulting in a 17-7 shot advantage in the half. After several scoring opportunities, the Lions offense would break through when Mackenzie Haladay found an open Megan Carver streaking toward the goal. Carver scored her first career collegiate goal, giving Harrisburg the lead, 1-0.
Penn College would find an answer in the 79th minute when Kaelan Cronan found Tiffany Brown in the box for a well-timed header, leveling the score at one. The teams remained deadlocked at one, sending the game to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime session, the Lions drew a corner kick a minute into double overtime. Madison Hemler took the corner kick, driving it into the box. Haladay would head the ball down, eventually finding the feet of Rhyan Socash who drove the game winning goal into the back of the net, securing the 2-1 victory.
