Penn State Harrisburg Battles Christopher Newport

Newport News, Va.- It was a very exciting day for the Penn State Harrisburg women's soccer team. The Nittany Lions traveled to Christopher Newport for a must win conference game. The women put up a very solid team effort but unfortunately fell to the Captains 3-2. 

The first goal of the game was scored by Harrisburg early on in the first half. In the seventh minute of play, Kylie Courtney (Honey Brook, Pa. / Twin Valley) passed the ball to the left side of the field for teammate Kristen Stark (Lancaster, Pa. / Donegal). Stark slid the ball past the goal keeper and put Harrisburg on the board for a 1-0 lead. The next goal of the game came from the home team in the thirty-ninth minute of play. Harrisburg was outshot by the Captains 17-1 in the first half but the second half proved to be much closer in terms of shots and possession.

 The visitors scored the third goal of the game in the first the minutes of the second half. They also went on to score the fourth goal of the game in the seventy-fourth minute of play. Although the Captains were leading 3-1 with only fifteen minutes to go, Harrisburg did not give up. Defender Eliza Grim (Millersburg, Pa. / Millersburg HS) sent a beautiful pass through Christopher Newport's defense in the seventy-ninth minute of play. Stark ran onto the pass and touched the ball toward's the goal before lining up a shot to the right corner. Harrisburg was now only down by one goal. The women fought hard throughout the last ten minutes and even had a quality opportunity in the last few seconds of the game. 

Head Coach Adam Clay was extremely happy with his team's performance, "I am so proud of the ladies effort competing today against one of the top teams in the country. We now hope to bring this effort on Tuesday and to finish our season on a high note." Unfortunately, due to today's loss, Harrisburg will not have a spot in play offs. The women will return to play on Tuesday, October 27 when they host Mary Washington. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
