Slow Second Half Costs Women's Hoops Against St. Mary's (Md.)

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball team couldn't hold off a second-half charge from United East foe St. Mary's (Md.) in a 53-46 setback at the Capital Union Building on Tuesday night, Jan. 31. 

 

Olivia Richardson scored a team-high nine points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Bailey Oehmig added eight points. 

 

After a slow opening quarter for both squads, the Lions (11-8, 8-2 United East) played a strong second quarter that saw them force 21 St. Mary's (Md.) turnovers before taking a 29-17 lead into halftime. 

 

The Seahawks (12-6, 8-2 United East) adjusted after the break, however, attacking the Penn State Harrisburg press with greater success and cutting the deficit to a more manageable 41-34 heading into the final frame. 

 

In the fourth, the St. Mary's (Md.) defense stifled the Lions offense, holding them to just five points in the stanza. Penn State Harrisburg struggled to get anything going in the halfcourt set and managed just one field goal, while the Seahawks shot 43.8 percent from the field to complete the comeback.

- The Lions shot just 27.8 percent from the floor and 24.2 percent from beyond the arc.

- Penn State Harrisburg was out rebounded 48-38. 

- The Seahawks racked up 16 second chance points.  

- Penn State Harrisburg's bench outscored the St. Mary's (Md.) reserves 16-6.

- Richardson finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

- Oehmig netted eight points to go along with five boards. 

- Giahny Correa added seven points, six rebounds, and five assists.

- Jayla Galbreath hit two 3-balls to finish with six points.  

- Ciani Redd-Howard had seven points and four steals. 

- Kendis Butler finished with seven rebounds and four steals.

- Jenna Montana added six points and three steals off the bench.
