Women's Hoops Dominates Wells In Conference Opener

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball team left no doubt in a 62-17 rout of United East foe Wells in the team's conference opener at the Capital Union Building on Friday night, Dec. 3.  

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Penn State Harrisburg (5-3, 1-0 United East) held Wells (0-5, 0-1 United East) scoreless in the second quarter and limited the visitors to just two points each in the opening and final frames, respectively, in a dominant win on Friday night. Kendis Butler led the way with game-highs of 24 points and seven rebounds, while Toni Amato also reached the double-digit scoring mark with 11. 

 

Butler accounted for eight of the team's nine first-quarter points and the Lions held a seven-point cushion after one but the Blue & White completely took control in the second quarter by outscoring the Express 17-0 during the frame. Jenna Montana tallied five points in the second and Penn State Harrisburg forced 11 turnovers in the quarter. 

 

The visitors shot much better in the third quarter, scoring 13 points on 62.5 percent shooting, but the Lions stayed hot from the field and dropped 22 on the Express in the third, led by Amato's nine and Butler's seven. Macy Carroll added four off the bench during the frame and the home team led 48-15 heading into the final 10 minutes. 

 

It was more of the same in the fourth quarter, with the Blue & White outscoring Wells 14-2 in the final stanza. Butler added two more 3-balls, while Paige Kubulak and Sydney Hemler each connected from beyond the arc to put the finishing touches on the lopsided victory. 

 

NOTABLES 

- The Lions shot 40 percent from the field, while Wells managed just 20 percent shooting on the night. 

- Penn State Harrisburg knocked down 11 shots from 3-point range. The Express connected on just two triples.  

- The Blue & White won the rebounding battle by a significant margin at 39-25.  

- The home team scored 22 points off 35 turnovers by Wells. 

- Penn State Harrisburg's bench outscored the visitors reserves 17-7.  

- Kendis Butler netted a game-high 24 points and grabbed a game-best seven rebounds to go along with four assists. 

Toni Amato finished with 11 points, three assists, and a pair of steals. 

Jenna Montana tallied five points, five boards, and two assists. 

Anna Mahan added five points, four rebounds, and a pair of blocks. 

Sydney Hemler had five points and two boards off the bench.  

- Paige Kubulak and Macy Carroll combined for eight points in a reserve capacity. 

Jayla Galbreath dished-out a game-best six assists.

The Lions continue conference play by hosting United East foe SUNY Morrisville at the Capital Union Building on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
