How It Happened

A key run midway through the fourth quarter proved the difference in Penn State Harrisburg's 91-83 setback to Gallaudet at the Capital Union Building on Wednesday night, Feb. 12.

Kendis Butler poured in a team-high 22 points for the Lions (10-11, 8-4 NEAC), while Madison Hemler recorded a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double. Jayla Galbreath netted 18 to go along with four assists and Laurel Amey tallied 11 points and seven boards.

Having cut a seven-point deficit to two following a pair of Sidney Gordon free throws early in the fourth quarter, the Blue & White saw  the game's momentum wrestled away when the Bison (8-13, 6-6 NEAC) put together a 9-0 run that stretched their lead to 77-66 with 6:09 left to play.

The visitors eventually increased their advantage to as many as 15 points at the 4:04 mark before Galbreath knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Lions a glimmer of hope but the home team was unable to muster more than one field goal in the final two minutes, allowing GU to escape with the victory.

Butler had the hot hand in the early going, burying a trio of 3-balls and scoring 10 points in the first quarter to keep Penn State Harrisburg within striking distance despite trailing 22-20 after the opening 10 minutes.

The second quarter saw Madison Hemler score eight points and collect four rebounds, while Galbreath connected on a pair of jumpers from beyond the arc. Amey's layup in the closing seconds of the first half cut Gallaudet's lead to just one at 45-44 at the break.

The Lions made a push in the third quarter, with a Butler 3-ball and Anna Mahan layup giving the Blue & White a 54-41 lead at the 6:52 mark. Two minutes later, it was back-to-back layups from Madison Hemler and Sydney Hemler, followed by a pair of Butler free throws that extended the advantage to 60-55.

GU responded, however, and closed out the quarter on a 13-2 spurt that set up the visitors to put enough distance between themselves and the Lions when making the game's final run in the fourth stanza.

Inside the Numbers

- Gallaudet shot 53.1 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point range.

- The Lions shot 45.2 percent from the floor and 41.9 percent from beyond the arc.

- The Bison went 20-of-24 from the charity stripe (83.3 percent).

- Penn State Harrisburg turned it over 20 times, leading to 28 GU points.

- Kendis Butler knocked down five 3-pointer en route to tallying a team-high 22 points.

- Madison Hemler recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

- Jayla Galbreath hit five 3-balls and finished with 18 points and four assists.

- Laurel Amey racked up 11 points, seven boards, five assists and three steals.

- Anna Mahan had six points and four rebounds.

- Sidney Gordon chipped in with five points and three steals.

- Sydney Hemler added four points and two steals off the bench.

- Cassidy Perry netted a game-high 25 points to lead the way for Gallaudet.

Playoff Picture

With the loss, Penn State Harrisburg fell to second in the NEAC South. The Blue & White currently sit a game back of Lancaster Bible in the divisional standings.

Who's Next?

The Lions will look to rebound when they host conference foe Keuka on Saturday afternoon.
