How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg used a 20-point fourth quarter to pick up a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) win over Gallaudet on Wednesday night, Jan. 29 by a score of 60-53.

 

Kendis Butler opened scoring for the Lions (8-9, 6-2), knocking down a three-pointer on the Lions first possession. Anna Mahan followed with a three-pointer of her own, giving Harrisburg an early 6-4 lead. Sidney Gordon knocked down a pair of threes midway through the first quarter extending the advantage to seven. After the Bison (5-11, 3-5) used a 4-0 run to close back within three-points, Mahan knocked down her second three-pointer of the quarter to extend the Lions lead back to six. Macy Carroll would close scoring in the quarter by making a layup to give the Lions an 18-12 lead.

 

Harrisburg opened the second quarter by attacking the basket. Layups from Laurel Amey and Mahan, helped the Lions maintain their advantage. Midway through the quarter, Mahan would connect on a deep three, to extend the Blue & White's advantage to 11 points. The Lions would remain in control, with Katelyn Kosovac closing the quarter with a layup, giving Harrisburg a 33-22 lead heading into the half.

 

Mahan who scored a game high 22 points, started the Lions scoring in the second half, knocking down a jump shot. The Bison would begin to cut into the Lions lead, sparked by leading scorer Cassidy Perry, who scored 20 points. The Bison would go on a 14-3 run to pull back within a single point late in the third quarter. Amey would convert a layup to slow Gallaudet's momentum, but the Bison would tie the game 40 heading into the fourth quarter.

 

The Bison would pull ahead by three-points early in the quarter, before Kayla Cade knocked down a short jump shot. Butler would recapture the lead for finishing a pair of layups, one off a steal by Gordon. After Gallaudet pulled back within two points, Butler would knock down a three-pointer to extend the lead. The teams would trade baskets with a Gordon jump shot giving Harrisburg a seven point advantage with 3:56 remaining in the fourth quarter. Butler followed that up with her third three-pointer of the game to put Harrisburg ahead by 10. Butler scored 12 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter. The Bison could not mount another rally, falling 60-53.  

 

Inside the Numbers

- Anna Mahan led the Lions scoring a game high 22 points while pulling in seven rebounds 

- Kendis Butler was the only other Lion to reach double figures, scoring 18 points and connecting three times from beyond arc

- Sidney Gordon chipped in, scoring eight points while making a pair of three-pointers

- The Bison won the rebounding battle, holding a 57-45 advantage

- Gallaudet was led by Cassidy Perry who recorded a double-double scoring 20 points and hauling in 15 rebounds

The Lions will continue NEAC play when they host Penn College on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m.
