How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg came up big down the stretch in a 59-56 victory over North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe Penn State Berks at the Capital Union Building on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25.

The Lions (7-9, 5-2 NEAC) were led by Kendis Butler's 17 points and Anna Mahan's 10-point, 11-rebound double-double. Laurel Amey added 11 points and six rebounds, while Paige Kubalak was the fourth player to reach double digits with 10.

With the Blue & White trailing 50-48 with less than seven minutes to play, Butler and Amey came up big when they connected on back-to-back 3-balls, with Butler's jumper giving the home team a lead it wouldn't relinquish and Amey's bucket making it a two-possession game with 5:55 remaining.

Jayla Galbreath stretched the advantage to 56-50 when she knocked down a pair of free throws at the 4:31 mark but Penn State Berks (8-6, 4-3 NEAC) cut the deficit to two with less than three minutes left thanks to consecutive layups by Katie Armstrong and Julia Bookwalter.

The final two and a half minutes saw both teams lock in defensively and keep the opposition off the board until the visitors, still trailing 56-54, were forced to foul in the closing seconds. Butler converted a pair from the charity stripe to give the Lions some breathing room with 14 ticks left before Amey sealed it with a free throw with less than 10 seconds remaining.

Inside the Numbers

- Penn State Berks shot 34.2 percent from the field, compared to 31.7 percent by the home team.

- The Lions knocked down seven 3-pointers, however, compared to just one on the day for the visitors.

- Berks finished with a 52-44 edge on the glass.

- Penn State Harrisburg got to the foul line 21 times, while the visitors shot just six free throws.

- Kendis Butler buried four 3-pointers en route to scoring 17 points and adding five rebounds.

- Anna Mahan recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 boards. She also blocked four shots.

- Laurel Amey netted 11 points to go along with six rebounds, two steals and a pair of assists.

- Paige Kubalak scored a career-high 10 points and pulled down two boards.

- Madison Hemler had five points, four rebounds and two steals in a reserve role.

- Jayla Galbreath and Sydney Hemler each had two points off the bench. Galbreath also corralled five rebounds.

- Katie Armstrong led the way for Penn State Berks with 19 points, 13 rebounds and eight steals.
