How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg used a strong fourth-quarter push to pick up a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) 73-69 road victory over South Division foe Penn College on Wednesday night, Jan. 15.

The Lions (5-8, 3-1 NEAC) got off to a good start, taking a 4-0 lead behind layups from Sidney Gordon and Anna Mahan. Penn College (3-7, 1-3 NEAC) scored seven straight points to take their first lead of the game. Harrisburg would battle back with a layup from Jayla Galbreath tying the game at nine. The Wildcats would close the quarter on a 9-4 run to hold a 17-13 advantage heading to the second quarter.

Kendis Butler got the Lions' offense started in the second quarter, draining her first 3-pointer of the game. The Lions would chip away at the deficit when Laurel Amey came away with a steal and finished the layup in transition. On Harrisburg's next offensive position, Butler would knock down her second 3-pointer of the quarter, pulling the Blue & White back within a point, 23-22. Penn College's Madison Klock answered back with a 3-pointer of her own, part of her team-high 17 points. The Lions would respond with back-to-back layups from Butler and Amey giving the visitors a one-point lead. The teams would trade the lead several times in the final minutes of the quarter, with Penn College holding a 36-33 lead going into the half.

Amey opened scoring in the third quarter hitting a layup off a steal by Butler. Madison Hemler hit a jump shot and drew a foul, giving the Blue & White their first lead of the half. The teams would trade the lead again, with a 3-pointer from Mahan giving Harrisburg a two-point advantage. Mahan was the game's leading scorer, recording 19 points and 12 rebounds. Penn College would respond, going on an 11-2 run to hold a seven-point lead with 1:33 remaining in the third quarter. As they did all night, the Lions battled back, using layups from Mahan and Kayla Cade to close the quarter on a 6-0 run and pull back within a single point.

Cade opened the fourth quarter by finishing a layup to give Harrisburg a 52-51 lead. Penn College answered back with four straight points to recapture the lead. Gordon connect on a 3-pointer to tie the game at 55. Trailing by one, Amey gathered a rebound and made a layup to retake the lead. Butler hit her third 3-pointer of the game, giving Penn State Harrisburg a four-point advantage. Using some clutch free-throw shooting, the Lions built the lead as large as nine points and held on for the 73-69 victory.

- The Lions' offense was led by Anna Mahan, who posted her second straight double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds

- Kendis Butler had a strong outing, scoring 16 points while knocking down three 3-pointers

- Laurel Amey reached double figures, scoring 12 points

- Penn College won the rebounding battle, holding a 46-37 advantage on the glass

- Madison Hemler was the final Lion to reach double figures, scoring 10 points while going 4-5 from the free throw line

- The Wildcats were led by Madison Klock, who scored 17 points off the bench, and Ja'Quela Dyer who posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds
