How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg used a great first quarter to power past North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe SUNY Cobleskill 79-67 at the Capital Union Building on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 12.

The Lions (4-8, 2-1) got off to a fast start, using three-pointers from Anna Mahan and Sidney Gordon to take an early 8-4 lead. Mahan who scored the team's first five points, led the Lions in scoring with 20 points. Laurel Amey would connect on her first three of the game and Mahan added a second three-pointer to take a six-point lead. Midway through the quarter, Kendis Butler hit her first three-pointer to extend the lead to nine. Amey would go on a five-point run of her own to stretch the advantage to 12. Kayla Cade closed the scoring with a layup with only 13 seconds remaining in the quarter, giving Harrisburg a 26-16 lead heading to the second quarter.

Gordon got the Lions three-point attack going in the second quarter, connecting on her second three-pointer of the game. The Fighting Tigers (6-6, 1-2) would close within four-points before Laurel Amey stormed to the basket for a layup. The teams would trade baskets midway through the quarter with Mahan connecting on a three-pointer to put Harrisburg ahead by nine points. Jayla Galbreath followed with a three-pointer, increasing the advantage to ten points. The Lions held a 43-35 advantage going to the half.

The Lions offense immediately got to work in the second half with Butler drawing a foul on a three-pointer and knocking down all three free throws. Gordon followed with a three-pointer of her own to extend the Lions lead back to 11-points. The teams would trade baskets for much of the rest of the third quarter. Amey would connect on a three-pointer with 2:41 remaining in the quarter and followed with a layup to go ahead by 14 points late in the quarter. Harrisburg would lead 62-50 heading into the final quarter. SUNY Cobleskill pulled within six-points in the final quarter, but clutch free throw shooting helped the Lions hold on for the 12-point victory.

Inside the Numbers

- Anna Mahan led the Lions, recording a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds

- Laurel Amey had one her best outings of the season, knocking down three 3-pointers and scoring 18 points

- As a team, the Lions continued to show why they are one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the nation, knocking down 13 3-pointers and shooting 43 percent from beyond the arc

- Kendis Butler scored 14 points, connecting twice from beyond the arc

- The Fighting Tigers held a 46-35 advantage in rebounds

- Sidney Gordon reached double figures, scoring 14 points  

- SUNY Cobleskill was led by Erica Cabrera who scored 19 points

The Lions will travel to face NEAC foe Penn College on Wednesday evening, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.
