How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg fell in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) matchup with SUNY Poly by a score of 67-55. The Lions (3-8, 1-1) could not overcome their first-half offensive struggles despite getting 17 points from Anna Mahan.

The Lions' offense struggled to find its rhythm in the first quarter, managing to score six points in the quarter on 3-pointers from Kendis Butler and Laurel Amey. SUNY Poly (4-7, 2-0) found its offensive attack late in the first quarter and used a couple key baskets from leading scorer Jaida Washington to close the quarter on an 8-0 run and hold a 15-6 lead heading into the second quarter.

Mahan looked to jump start the Lions' offense in the second quarter connecting on an pair of early three-pointers.  The Wildcats would respond with a three of their own to build the lead back to 10 points midway through the quarter. This sparked an 11-1 run for the Wildcats, allowing them to build an 18-point advantage. Three's from Butler and Sidney Gordon helped the Lions head to the locker room trailing by only 13-points.

SUNY Poly took full control of the game in the opening minutes of the third quarter, starting the quarter on a 16-4 run to capture a 50-25 lead with five minutes remaining in the quarter. Jayla Galbreath helped the Lions battle back, scoring twice from behind the arc to pull Harrisburg a little closer heading to the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lions would go on an 8-0 sparked by a spinning layup from Madison Hemler and capped off by a Mahan three-pointer. The Lions would slowly reduce the deficit, with Butler connecting on a three-pointer with only two minutes remaining to pull back within 18 points. Late foul shooting would help the Lions get within 12 points, but they would get no closer, falling 67-55.

Inside the Numbers

- The Lions offensive attack was led by Anna Mahan who scored 17 points, pulling in seven rebounds

- Jayla Galbreath had a solid outing, connecting on a pair of three's in route to 10 points

- The Wildcats edged the Lions in the rebounding battle, 44-40

- Kendis Butler added three more three-pointers to her season total, scoring nine points

- SUNY Poly's Jaida Washington led all scorers with 22 points, nine rebounds and added four blocks

- Madison Hemler added a nice spark off the bench, scoring five points while collecting six rebounds

Who's Next?

The Lions host NEAC foe SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 12 at 2:00 p.m. The Lions will be celebrating youth students who attended the teams Learn 2 Lead camp this past summer.
