How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg (3-3) fell in a non-conference match-up with Clarks Summit University (4-4) by a score of 74-69 on Tuesday December 10.

The teams traded the lead early on, with Laurel Amey scoring the Lions opening five points of the game, connecting on a three-pointer to give Harrisburg a 5-4 advantage. Midway through the opening quarter, Harrisburg would go on a 7-0 run with layups from Anna Mahan and Kendis Butler, capped off with a three pointer from Sydney Gordon, to put Harrisburg ahead by three. The Defenders would answer closing the quarter on a 6-0 run to hold a 17-14 advantage entering the second quarter.

Mahan would open the Lions scoring the second quarter, knocking down her first three-pointer of the game. She would score 11 of her game-high 27 points in the second quarter. Clarks Summit answered back and built a seven-point advantage midway through the second quarter, leading 26-19. Butler would start the Lions rally knocking down a jump shot. Mahan would knock down a pair of three-pointers and eventually the Lions managed to level the score at 31. The Defenders Elizabeth Singleton finished a layup right before the half to give Clarks Summit a 33-31 advantage at the break. Singleton led the Defenders in scoring, posting 20 points in the game.

The Blue & White got off to a fast start in the third quarter and used three-pointers from Mahan, Butler, and Amey to build a 40-35 advantage early in the quarter. Mahan continued her three-point barrage knocking down her second of the quarter, stretching Harrisburg's lead to seven. The Defenders rallied back, using a 15-2 run to recapture the lead and control of the game. Mahan put a stop to the run with her sixth three-pointer of the game and two Butler free three pulled the Lions within one point heading to the final quarter.

Mahan opened the fourth quarter by hitting her seventh three-pointer of the game, tying the single game school record for three's in a game in the process, and giving a Harrisburg the lead. After the Defenders Singleton hit a three-pointer of her own to recapture the lead, Butler would knock down another three-pointer, putting the Lions ahead by two. The teams would continue to trade the lead back-and-forth, before the Defenders used a 6-0 run to take two possession lead late in the quarter. Butler would connect on one last three-pointer with 2:00 minutes remaining to pull Harrisburg within one point, 67-66, but the Defenders held off the Lions final push, capturing the victory.  

Inside the Numbers

- Anna Mahan led the offense scoring 27 points as she tied the single game record for three-pointers made with seven.

- Kendis Butler added 18 points, knocking down three three-pointers

- The Defenders held a slight rebounding advantage, 29-28

- Laurel Amey reached double figures, scoring 15 points

- Clarks Summit's offense was led by Elizabeth Singleton who scored 20 points and posted seven rebounds

- Harrisburg continued to show its three-point shooting ability, connecting 14 times as team from behind the arc
