How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg put together a game-changing run in the fourth quarter that proved the difference in the team's 76-69 victory over Delaware Valley in the championship game of the 2019 Pride – Spirit – Honor Tournament presented by Fairfield Inn & Suites at the Capital Union Building on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions (2-2) were led by Anna Mahan's 20 points, nine rebounds and five steals, while Kendis Butler netted 18 points for the second consecutive day to go along with four assists and four boards. Laurel Amey was the third player to reach the double-digit scoring mark with 15 points and five rebounds.

Trailing 67-63 with 7:55 left to play, the Blue & White scored 10 points in a row; a spurt capped by a Sidney Gordon fastbreak layup off a beautiful feed in transition from Butler with just 52 seconds remaining. During the crucial spurt, Kayla Cade, Mahan and Butler all converted free throws in crunch time to put the game out of reach for good.

The Aggies (1-5) netted the game's first six points but the home team responded and eventually used back-to-back layups from Mahan and Madison Hemler to finish the first quarter with a 16-13 advantage. Penn State Harrisburg pulled ahead by as many as nine points in the second quarter following an Amey layup and a Macy Carroll free throw.

The visitors made a push after halftime and reclaimed a slim lead early in the third quarter but Butler, Amey and Mahan knocked down timely jumpers from beyond the arc to keep the Lions within striking distance heading to the final quarter.

Inside the Numbers

- The Lions took advantage of 24 Delaware Valley turnovers, scoring 13 points off the visitors' miscues.

- The Blue & White also racked up 16 second-chance points, compared to just four for the Aggies.

- The Penn State Harrisburg bench outscored the DVU reserves 14-9.

- Del Val won the rebounding battle 46-37.

- Anna Mahan scored a team-high 20 points and added nine rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocks. She was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts.

- Kendis Butler netted 18 points, including 12 from 3-point territory, to go along with four assists, four boards and a steal. Thanks to her performance this weekend, she was named the tournament's most valuable player (MVP).

- Laurel Amey also had a nice afternoon, tallying 15 points, five rebounds, a pair of assists and one steal.

- Kayla Cade posted seven points, six rebounds, two blocks, two steals and an assist in just her second start.

- Sidney Gordon netted six points off the bench, while both Madison Hemler and Macy Carroll added four points apiece.
