How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg earned a decisive Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) victory at St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday night, Feb. 13. The Lions were powered by an outstanding effort from Shanique Mattis, who knocked down a program-record seven 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 31 points. Along with Mattis, Kendis Butler, Anna Mahan and Laurel Amey also reached double figures.

The Lions' offense got off to a quick start with Mattis connecting twice from beyond the arc, helping the Blue & White take an early 8-2 lead. The Seahawks would respond and take a four-point lead with over a minute remaining in the quarter. Briana Davis found an open Butler who knocked down a 3-pointer to close the gap. Mattis then added her third 3-ball of the quarter, allowing the Lions to retake the lead heading to the second quarter.

The teams would trade the lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter, with Amey burying a triple to tie the game at 26-26. Mattis then hit her fourth trey of the game, giving Penn State Harrisburg a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the game. The visitors would go on a 14-3 run to end the half, holding a 37-29 lead at the break.

The Blue & White roared out of the locker room with Butler and Mahan each connecting on 3-balls in the opening minutes of the half, extending the Lions advantage to 14 points. Harrisburg's offense continued to roll, with Mattis scoring seven points in the quarter. Davis hit a jump shot just before the time expired in the third quarter, giving the Lions a 58-44 lead heading to the final quarter.

Butler and Amey each connected on shots from 3-point range to grow the lead to 17 points two minutes into the fourth quarter. From there Mattis would close out the game, scoring 10 points including two more 3-pointers to put an exclamation point on the Lions 79-62 victory.  

Inside the Numbers

- Shanique Mattis had a historic night, setting a program record for 3-pointers made with seven. She also cored a career-high 31 points.

- Kendis Butler scored 13 points and connected three times from beyond the arc.

- Anna Mahan reached double figures, scoring 11 points.

- Laurel Amey scored 10 points and dished out four assists.

- The Seahawks were led by Gina Seifert, who scored 16 points.

- Harrisburg connected on 13 3-pointers, bringing their season total to 245, ranking them in the top 10 in the nation.

Who's Next?

The Lions will return home for Senior Day when they face Christopher Newport on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m.
