How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg fell in a road game at Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe and No. 18 Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 19. Kendis Butler led the Lions with 19 points, including six 3-pointers.

In the first half, the Lions' offense struggled to handle the full-court defensive pressure applied by the Captains. Defensively, the Lions were able to create 12 first-half turnovers, leading to a few open layups in transition. The CNU offense found its rhythm in the second quarter, however, scoring 32 points and extending the lead to 36 heading into halftime.   

The Lions found some offensive success in the third quarter, with Rachel Miller and Butler each connecting on a pair of early, deep 3-balls. In the paint, Abrianna Hamby would score a pair of contested layups. With a minute remaining in the third quarter, Butler would again connect on a corner trey, this time drawing a foul and converting the free throw for the 4-point play. Shanique Mattis would come away with a steal as the seconds ticked away in the third quarter, racing down the court and drawing a foul on her layup attempt. She connected on both free throws, closing out a 22-point third quarter by the Lions.

Despite the large deficit, Penn Harrisburg would continue to battle in the final quarter. Mattis added a pair of 3-pointers earning her a double-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds and eight steals. Katie Humphrey would also connect on three from distance, totaling a season-high nine points. The Captains' offense continue to roll in the final quarter, preventing the Lions from getting back into the game, powering to the 89-61 victory.

Who's Next?

The Lions will return home to face St. Mary's (Md.) in CAC action on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m.
