Harrisburg Falls on the Road to Newport

Newport News, Va.- Saturday January 30th, this afternoon the Penn State Harrisburg women's basketball team traveled to Virginia to take on Christopher Newport. The Lady Lions started out strong in the first quarter but struggled as the game progressed. Penn State Harrisburg fell, 77-54, to the Captains.

Harrisburg got an early lead in the first quarter thanks to a strong start from the starting five. Jasmine Yanich (Harrisburg, Pa. / Susquehanna Township) got her first three of the day in the first three minutes while also putting Harrisburg on top, 7-4. Kiara Carter (Bronx, N.Y / Milton Hershey) stepped up and added two more points to the Lions lead. Newport went on a five point run to try and regain the lead but was stopped with a layup from Brittany Ulrich (Lebanon, Pa. / Lebanon). Christopher Newport started the second quarter with a five point run to lead Harrisburg 23-15. Harrisburg was limited to only six points in the second quarter due to Newport's strong defense. The home team led, 33-19, heading into the half.

The Lions had a strong start in the third quarter after Ulrich hit back to back layups. Lucky Snypse (Philadelphia, Pa. / George Washington Carver) followed in Ulrich's footsteps with her own bucket to put Harrisburg 11 behind the Captains. The women fought to make a comeback in the fourth quarter but Newport's first half lead proved to be too much. Ulrich led for Harrisburg with 10 points.

Penn State Harrisburg will be back at home on Monday February 1st. The women will take on Salisbury at 6 pm.
