Frostburg St., Md. – The Penn State Harrisburg women's basketball team started out with an 8-0 run in their Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) matchup Thursday February 6th against the Frostburg St. Bobcats. Unfortunately, despite a pair of double-double's, 40 turnovers would prove too costly as the Lions fell 75-63.
After the great start by the Blue and White to go on an 8-0 run in the first 3:24; the Bobcats responded quickly with an 11-2 run to take their first lead of the game with 13:12 left in the first half. Things stayed very close over the next few minutes and got even tighter thanks to Rachel Moyer's (Carlisle, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) personal run; she scored six of the eight Harrisburg points that helped tie the game at 21 a piece with 6:56 to go in the half.
At this point the Bobcats went on the attack, mostly spurring from their intense defensive pressure that forced Lion turnovers and allowed Frostburg to take a 39-30 lead heading into the locker rooms.
In the second half it was Frostburg who jumped out early with an 8-0 run of their own. This put the Blue and White down by 17, the largest lead of the night for either team. Lucky Snypse (Philadelphia, Pa. / George Washington Carver) scored five straight, before a Hannah Jorich (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown) layup and Jasmine Yanich (Susquehanna Township, Pa. / Susquehanna) jumper brought the Harrisburg deficit back to single digits 47-39.
Over the next few minutes the Bobcats were able to maintain the lead, but no ground was taken by either squad. Katie Schwenk's (lykens, Pa. / Upper Dauphin) layup with 7:31 to play put the Lions within eight points. Unfortunately, this was as close as the Lions would get. The Lions showed moments of high level basketball, but the points off of their turnovers proved costly and had to settle for the 75-63 loss.
Snypse played one of the best games of her career scoring 17 points to lead the team in scoring as well as grabbing 12 rebounds. Moyer was not far off, she scored 12 and had a team high 16 rebounds as both women claimed double-double's.
Harrisburg still has an outside chance of making the playoffs, but one more loss will almost surely seal their post season fate. Harrisburg returns home to host Southern Virginia this Saturday at the Capitol Union Building for a 12:00 tip-off.
