Softball Stays Hot With Sweep of Gallaudet

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's softball team kept on rolling with a doubleheader sweep of United East foe Gallaudet at Courtney Pollock Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon, April 16. The Lions won the opener 11-2 before closing out the day with a 13-0 shutout in the nightcap.

 

GAME 1

Penn State Harrisburg (17-8, 11-2 United East) scored in every inning of the team's 11-2 victory over Gallaudet (3-24, 3-14 United East) in the first outing of a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

 

Madelyn Lehigh was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Steph Reider went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Samantha Weaver laced a pair of doubles, drove in two runs and scored two more. Carissa Yeager picked up her 14th win of the year in the circle, allowing just two runs on five hits.

 

The Lions jumped out to a sizable lead in the bottom of the first, racking up seven runs on nine hits, including a pair of doubles from Weaver and Madelyn Krantz. The Blue & White extended the advantage to nine thanks to a sac fly from Delaney Nevius and a ground ball from Weaver in the bottom of the second.

 

The home team led by as many as 10 runs following Reider's two-out RBI double that plated Lehigh from first base but the Bison got on the board thanks to four hits in the top of the fourth. The Lions answered back in the bottom half when Rylee Tineri singled home Weaver to cap the game's scoring.

 

GAME 2

Penn State Harrisburg (18-8, 12-2 United East) left no doubt in earning the doubleheader sweep of conference opponent Gallaudet (3-25, 3-15 United East) on Saturday afternoon, posting a 13-0 shutout in the nightcap.

 

McKenzie Boozel led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, five RBI, and two runs scored. Madelyn Lehigh, Delaney Nevius, and Lauren Hess also had multi-hit outings. Mary-Kate Penczkowski picked up the win on the rubber, allowing just three hits and a walk.

 

The Lions struck first when Boozel's double to center field plated Lehigh before Nevius singled to push Boozel across in the bottom of the first. Boozel added to her RBI total in the ensuing stanza when her two-out single scored Hess and Madelyn Krantz, while Olivia Herncane came home thanks to a wild pitch.

 

The bats exploded in the bottom of the fourth, as the Blue & White racked up eight more runs on seven hits, including two doubles and a triple, and two walks. The Bison managed just one hit in the top of the fifth and Penczkowski closed things out with a strikeout that sealed the doubleheader sweep.

- Mary-Kate Penczkowski allowed just three hits in earning her fourth win of the season in game two.
