Bats Erupt For 49 Runs In Softball's Sweep of Wells

AURORA, N.Y. - The bats for Penn State Harrisburg's softball team were out in full force during a doubleheader sweep of conference foe Wells on Tuesday afternoon, April 12. The Lions thundered to a 28-0 victory in game one before closing out the day with a 21-2 win in the nightcap. 

 

GAME 1

Penn State Harrisburg (14-8, 7-2 United East) set new single-game program records for runs scored and RBI in a 28-0, five-inning victory over United East opponent Wells (0-15, 0-11 United East) in the opening contest of a conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. 

 

Carissa Yeager threw five innings of no-hit ball, allowing just two walks and striking out six to earn the win inside the circle. Steph Reider and Madelyn Lehigh racked up four hits apiece, while Reider and Olivia Herncane each drove in a game-high five runs. Lehigh and Madelyn Krantz also scored five runs each. 

 

The Lions started the game with a bang by scoring a dozen runs in the top of the opening frame and never looked back, totaling 22 hits in the first contest and putting up crooked numbers in all five stanzas.

 

Herncane's three-run home run in the third inning highlighted the offensive fireworks, while Reider drove in at least one run in five of her six plate appearances in game one. 

 

GAME 2

Penn State Harrisburg (14-8, 8-2 United East) capped off one of the strongest days at the plate in program history with a 21-2 five-inning victory over conference foe Wells (0-16, 0-12 United East) in the second outing of a United East doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

 

Steph Reider stayed hot, going 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored. Emma Einarson went 3-for-4 with three doubles, four runs scored, and a game-high six RBI, while Madeline English finished 3-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI. McKenzie Boozel and Samantha Weaver also had multi-with games. Carissa Yeager struck out five batters en route to earning her second victory of the day inside the circle.

 

The Lions picked up where they left off in the opener, jumping out to a comfortable lead by scoring six runs in the top of the first before putting things away early by adding nine in the second frame.

 

Boozel and Olivia Herncane each homered in the top of the second and Einarson provided the pop in the back half of the lineup throughout the game. Weaver drove in three runs from the nine spot thanks to an early RBI doubles. 

 

NOTABLES

- The Lions set new single-game program records for runs and RBI in the opening victory.

- Olivia Herncane went 3-for-6 with a home run, five RBI, and four runs scored. 

- Rylee Tineri had a nice first outing, going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and two RBI. 

- Emma Einarson was 3-for-4 with three doubles, six RBI, and four runs scored in game two.

- Madeline English also went 3-for-4 in the nightcap with an RBI and four runs.

- Herncane homered for the second straight game, while Boozel added a bomb in the second contest.

- Yeager picked up her second win of the day, allowing just two runs on four hits to go along with five strikeouts in the nightcap.

The Lions return to the friendly confines of Courtney Pollock Memorial Field for another conference doubleheader against United East foe Lancaster Bible on Friday afternoon.
