Softball Picks Up First Victory of the Season

How It Happened

A late barrage at the plate lifted Brevard past Penn State Harrisburg in a 10-3 victory in the first game of the Lions' twinbill in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Tuesday, March 10.

 

The Tornadoes had two lone runs in the top of the second and third but ultimately came alive in the fourth inning. Brittany Franks' single to right field led Lauren Dowell to home plate before Brevard scored two more runs prior to the end of the inning.

 

The Blue & White caught a break in the bottom of the fourth when an error allowed three runs to score and Kaylee DeMatteo to reach second base.

 

Brevard worked out of the jam, however, as the Tornadoes put up five more runs in the top of the sixth and kept Penn State Harrisburg off the board the rest of the way.

 

At the Plate

- Madelyn Pyle was 2-for-4 with a double.

- Three other lions had one hit each on the afternoon including Sarah Coolbaugh, Delaney Nevius and McKenzie Boozel.

- Brevard had 13 total hits from eight different players.

 

Inside the Circle

- Sierra Dixon got the start for Penn State Harrisburg, throwing one strikeout and allowing five runs.

- Mary-Kate Penczkowski struck out two batters and gave up five runs in three innings of work.

- Jordan Kielson got the win for the Tornadoes, after allowing just three runs.

 

Around the Diamond

- Penn State Harrisburg committed three errors, while Brevard had one defensive miscue.

- The Tornadoes had one stolen base by Lauren Dowell.

How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg picked up its first victory of the young season by defeating Clarks Summit 3-2 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Tuesday afternoon, March 10.

 

Madelyn Pyle, Sarah Coolbaugh and Kaylee DeMatteo each had multi-hit outings, while Mary-Kate Penczkowski earned her first win of the spring inside the circle after striking out six batters and allowing just one run in four innings thrown.

 

The Lions (1-5) fell behind in the early going when CSU scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning but the Blue & White responded in the bottom of the fourth, using four hits, including a Dominique Emmett double and three singles, as well as a passed ball and Madelyn Krantz sacrifice fly to plate three runs in the frame.

 

The Defenders (0-5) cut the deficit to one thanks to an RBI double in the top of the sixth but Penczkowski stranded a pair of Clarks Summit runners in the seventh and struck out the side to end the threat and seal the Penn State Harrisburg victory.

 

At the Plate

- Sarah Coolbaugh went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.

- Kaylee DeMatteo finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

- Madelyn Pyle was 2-for-4 and drove in a run.

- Dominique Emmett doubled and scored a run.

 

Inside the Circle

- Mary-Kate Penczkowski got the win for the Lions, striking out six batters and allowing just one run on four hits in four innings of work.

- Sierra Dixon got the start for Penn State Harrisburg and surrendered just two hits and one run in three innings thrown.

- Elyse Gunther took the loss for CSU after giving up three runs on 11 hits and three walks.

 

Around the Diamond

- Neither team committed an error.

- The Defenders stole three bases on the day.

- Kaylee DeMatteo had three assists from her third base spot.
