How It Happened

Unearned runs proved too much for Penn State Harrisburg to overcome in a 4-2 loss to Medaille in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Monday afternoon, March 9.

Pitchers Kaylee DeMatteo and Mary-Kate Penczkowski combined to allow no earned runs, while Sarah Coolbaugh was the lone Blue & White player to have a multi-hit outing.

Madelyn Pyle got the scoring started for the Lions with an RBI groundout which allowed Nicole Hoch to score in the top of the second.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Mavericks plated four runs, all of which were unearned and the only runs for them throughout the remainder of the game.

Penczkowski tried to get a two-out rally going in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single that brought home Madelyn Krantz but the comeback effort stalled out and Medaille held on for the narrow victory.

At the Plate

- Samantha Weaver was 1-for-1 with a double.

- Mary-Kate Penczkowski went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

- Sarah Coolbaugh finished 2-for-4, while Madelyn Pyle drove in one run.

- Madelyn Krantz walked twice and scored one run.

Inside the Circle

- Kaylee DeMatteo got the start, surrendering just two hits, one walk and no earned runs in three innings of work.

- Mary-Kate Penczkowski struck out two batters and allowed no hits, no walks and no runs in a relief appearance.

- Sarah Hapeman got the win for Medaille, after giving up one run on three hits and four walks. She also had four strikeouts.

Around the Diamond

- The Lions committed four errors, leading to four unearned runs for Medaille.

- The Mavericks racked up four stolen bases on the day.

- Madelyn Krantz had five assists from her shortstop position.

How It Happened 

Penn State Harrisburg dropped a 6-0 decision to Dean in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Monday afternoon, March 9.

Dean got it started early in the bottom of the first when Karissa Menzinger sent a double to center field, scoring two runners. In the same inning, the Bulldogs scored again off an RBI single from Makenzie Souza.

Beginning in the top of the third, the Lions tried to get the rally going with a single by Madelyn Krantz that eventually led to a Sarah Coolbaugh walk and Delaney Nevius reaching first on a Bulldog error. However, struggles at the plate plagued the Blue & White for much of the day and kept them from getting on the board. 

Dean tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to put things out of reach. 

At the Plate

- Penn State Harrisburg had four hits on the afternoon, one each from Madelyn Krantz, Delaney Nevius, Kaylee DeMatteo and Natalya Steppe.

- Sarah Coolbaugh walked twice out of her two times at bat. 

- Dean finished with 10 total hits from Melanie Rios-Nevarez (2), Gianna Bencivengo (3), Karissa Menzinger (3), Makenzie Souza (1) and Miranda Seacord (1).

Inside the Circle

- Mary-Kate Penczkowski got the start for the Lions before giving way to Sierra Dixon after surrendering three runs. 

- Dixon faced 24 batters in five innings of work, allowing three runs. 

- Karissa Menzinger got the complete-game win for Dean, giving up just four hits on the day.

Around the Diamond 

- Dean committed a pair of errors, while the Blue & White had one defensive miscue. 

- Neither team stole a base.

- Penn State Harrisburg had its chances but ultimately left nine runners on base.

The Lions return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they take on Brevard at 3:30 p.m. before finishing off the day against Clarks Summit at 3:30 p.m.
