How It Happened

The Penn State Harrisburg softball team traveled to face Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe Mary Washington.

 

Harrisburg's offensive got off to a fast start, striking in the first inning. Katie Humphrey led off the game with a single to center field. After Delaney Nevius laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Humphrey into scoring position, Nina Bruno doubled to left center giving Harrisburg the 1-0 advantage. Later in the inning, Kaylee Simon drove a single into center field, scoring Bruno.

 

Starting pitcher Allison Hartman would keep Mary Washington in check for most of the game, but the Eagles would string together a pair of hits in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Mary Washington would also tack on an insurance run in the fifth inning. Harrisburg's Kaylee DeMatteo attempt to start a rally in the seventh inning, with a line drive single into left field to lead off the seventh inning, but the Lions could not continue capitalize, falling 4-2.

 

At the Plate                                                         

- Kaylee DeMatteo led the team going 2-3 with a pair of singles

- Nina Bruno went 1-2 with an RBI double in the first inning

- Katie Humphrey added a pair of singles

- Kaylee Simon drove in teams other run with an RBI single in the first inning

 

In the Circle 

- Allison Hartman allow four runs, two earned, on nine hits

How It Happened 

Harrisburg regrouped from its game one defeat, capturing the lead in the second inning of game two. Kaylee DeMatteo led off the inning with a single into right field. After Maddie Krantz laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her into scoring position, Carlee Gochenaur singled to left field to put runners on the corners. Katie Humphrey would then hit a hard ground ball at the Eagles second baseman, allowing DeMatteo to score.

 

Game one pitcher Allison Hartman returned to the circle for game two, holding the Eagles to eight hits. Mary Washington would plate a run in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to take 3-1 advantage heading into the seventh inning.

 

The Lions looked to rally in the seventh inning and Gochenaur led off the inning with a single to center field. Humphrey would then reach on an error by the Eagles second baseman to put runners on first and second. Later in the inning, Hartman would drive a single into right field, plating Humphrey and cutting the deficit to one. Harrisburg would be unable to pull any closer, falling 3-2.

 

At the Plate

- Allison Hartman went 3-4 at the plate, driving in a run in the seventh inning

- Kaylee DeMatteo again went 2-3 with a pair singles and scored a run in the second inning

- Carlee Gochenaur went 2-3 with two singles

- Katie Humphrey drove in the Lion's first run in the second inning

 

In the Circle

- Allison Hartman pitched six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and added three strikeouts

 

Who's Next?

The Lions will step away from conference action, when they travel to Juniata College on Tuesday April 9 at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
