How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg was unable to capitalize on a number of opportunities in a 5-1 loss to Wesley in the opening contest of a non-conference doubleheader at Courtney Pollock Memorial Field on Thursday afternoon, March 14.

The Lions (5-3) scored their lone run when Carlee Gochenaur worked a bases-loaded walk that drove in Sarah Coolbaugh in the bottom of the first inning and cut an early two-run deficit in half. Unfortunately, the Blue & White were unable to do any further damage, stranding three baserunners to end the threat and the stanza.

The Wolverines (4-7) tacked on a run in the top of the third before adding a pair in the fourth to extend their advantage to 5-1 after three and a half frames.

The Blue & White moved runners into scoring position twice in the final innings but failed to bring them across. Delaney Nevius doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh but Wesley pitcher Jessica Anderson worked out of it to seal the win.

How It Happened

A combination of struggling at the plate and an offensive outburst by Wesley hitters proved too much to overcome in Penn State Harrisburg's 10-0 loss in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader at Courtney Pollock Memorial Field on Thursday evening, March 14.

The Wolverines (5-7) put up multiple runs in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings, respectively, while the Lions (5-4) managed just one hit in the second of two contests. Katie Humphrey opened the game with a single in the hole before the Blue & White bats went quiet.

Holding a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, the visitors used a double, a triple and an RBI single in three consecutive at-bats to tack on three insurance runs and put things out of reach before capping the scoring with another three spot in the top of the seventh.

At the Plate

- Katie Humphrey's lead-off single was Penn State Harrisburg's only base hit.

- Wesley racked up 16 hits, including four extra-base knocks.

- The Wolverines' Karina Cardona was especially impressive, hitting three doubles and driving in three runs.

Inside the Circle

- Kaylee Simon got the start for the Lions, going four innings and allowing nine hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts.

- Mary-Kate Penczkowski made a relief appearance for the Blue & White, going three innings and scattering seven hits.

- Wesley's Abbey Mayse got the win, throwing a complete game and allowing one hit and no walks.

Around the Diamond

- Wesley committed the game's only error.

- The Wolverines' Bianca Newsom had the game's lone stolen base.

- Nina Bruno had four putouts and shortstop.

- Carlee Gochenaur tallied three assists from her third base position.
