Tough Start in Conference Play For Tennis Teams

The Men's and Women's tennis team traveled for a tough weekend of matches to open their Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) season. The Lions faced off against St. Mary's College on Saturday March 24th and Mary Washington on Sunday March 25th.

On the men's side, Harrisburg suffered a 9-0 defeat to St. Mary's to start the weekend.  Eventually suffereing a 9-0 loss, the #1 doubles team of Pranoy Banka and Ryan McCurdy put up the best fight in a 8-5 defeat.  Banka was also stong in singles, winning his first set 7-5, before going down in three sets at the #2 singles position. 

Harrisburg picked things up on Sunday, but still suffered a 7-2 loss to Mary Washington.  The Eagles have won the CAC Championship 16 out of the last 17 years.  The Lions wins came at the #5 and #6 singles thanks to Isaac George and Noah Nacionales who both won in straight sets.  

The women also had a difficult weekend line up.  In their first match with St. Mary's the Lions struggled to get an doubles or single win.  Courtney Bennet was the closest at the #3 singles spot, losing 6-3 and 6-0.  Harrisburg took on the Mary Washington Eagles on Sunday.  The Eagles women have won the CAC Championship since 2004 and came into the match ranked 16th nationally.  Maria Torre won a few games at the #2 singles, but the rest of the Lions struggled against the natioally ranked opponent.  

Both teams will get a chance at redemption on Monday March 26th when they travel to face Lancaster Bible College.
